Super 32 Results

Still not a fan of Flowrestling, even if the brackets for this are up and (sort of) easy to use.

Complete results from local wrestlers (I believe, anyway) follow below. There’s a reason that a few of these kids were Matmen #1s last year and just about all of these kids were ranked somewhere on the poll last year (Miller is a new move-in and I don’t think Martinson was ranked, but he’s put a ton of time in this off-season).

We’re 37!

We’re not old…

(waits for laughter)

Any Monty Python fans here? Holla if yes. Anyhoo, yes, we now have 37 schedules in hand, as Westside is reporting in with a few old dates and a few new ones on the Wolverines’ slate of matches this year. Westside goes new early, with a home dual to open the season, against Lee, and then stays on the Westside with Ed White’s King of the Hill duals event, then Bishop Snyder’s Kiwanis IBT meet the following weekend, and then the Backyard Bash at Lee to wrap up December.

The Wolverines will make an appearance at Terry Parker to kick off January, and after Gateway the following weekend, will go to St Johns County for the Bear Duals at Bartram Trail on January 23. Westside will then travel to St. Augustine in late January and Orange Park in early February for duals, wrapping up the regular season with its Westside Duals on February 6th.

So which school wants to make us old? I think YOURS does…we’ve only got 11 left.

We’ve Hit The Three-Quarter Mark

With Pedro Menendez coming in just a few minutes ago, we’re now at 36 out of 48 teams in the fold thus far! Just 12 to go…and I think a couple of those I may be waiting all the way up until the season begins, sadly, for the kids involved who do work hard at this.

Menendez has full weekends going pretty much every weekend, with visits at North Florida Duals, Fletcher’s duals and the Backyard Bash (which was a round-robin last year) at Lee. The Falcons then will step up to Flagler Palm Coast’s Christmas duals event to go into the holiday, and will come back in January with the #BattleForTheFirstCity on January 6th against SAHS, then hit Terry Parker twice (sandwiching the St Johns River Conference visit to Matanzas). The Falcons will close out with IBTs at Flagler Palm Coast and Clay, and then participate in a triangular at Bartram Trail to end the regular season.

We’re at 75%. Who’s going to tip the scales toward MORE?

Herding ‘Em In

Reached out to the coaches for schools remaining on my update page — 13 in all, with 10 coaches (9 HCs and 1 assistant) emailed. I also copied the athletic directors at Paxon, Stanton, Duval Charter, Providence and University Christian. In most cases, I’m simply missing a schedule, but in three cases (Stanton, Duval Charter and Providence) I don’t know who the coach is for the upcoming season and in one case I’m not 100% certain there is going to be a team.

Next week, I’ll be starting to send emails to coaches weekly through my usual “blasts” that I send out. If any of the schools with a missing coach name have committed to your events, coaches, please advise me through our usual channels.

Middleburg Makes It 35!

I had meant to write this at “work” but then I had the opportunity to run away earlier than usual (although I then made a tactical error and made a phone call and got put on hold for an hour, but I digress).

The Broncos’ schedule comes from the school website. I don’t have, on the school’s site, an actual tournament venue for December 5, but I have it on reasonably-good authority and I’m playing a hunch that Middleburg will be — as it’s been each of the last two seasons — at North Florida Duals and Bishop Snyder, where they are returning for the Kiwanis Invite. That’s the last date on the school’s site for December.

In January there are home duals with 2A and Clay County rivals, with Orange Park, Ridgeview, Creekside and Oakleaf all making the jaunt. The Broncos will be at the St Johns River Conference tournament in the middle of January and then will travel to Wakulla’s round-robin event January 22/23, Flagler’s Rotary event at month-end and Clay’s Rotary event in February. Thanks to the school’s website, I finally learned that 2A-District 3 will be back at Englewood and, this year, I should be able to go!

So we are down to 13 teams left. Eight Duvals (5 public, 3 private) and five from the surrounding area. It would be fantastic to get all of the schedules before practice begins…in 13 days.

Let’s Go #NextLevel

Hopefully, these will come out on Mondays. Still need to track down events from the weekend at the NCWA level.

  • Josh Fox (University Christian ’12)…Lost in first round of Ohio State’s wrestleoffs, 10-4, to true freshman Kollin Moore at 197 pounds last Friday. Final wrestleoffs are scheduled for Thursday night, with the OSU season-opener November 7 at Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti.
  • Josh Calhoun (Bolles ’15)…Competed in wrestleoffs for Edinboro University (PA) on Saturday, dropping a pair of decisions. Calhoun fell, 8-0, to sophomore Jensen Lorea, and lost to freshman Nate Hagan, 7-1. Edinboro’s first scheduled dates are a triad of duals on November 7 at Eastern Michigan.
  • Kaleb Warner (Columbia ’15)…Was not on the slate of competitors for Campbell University’s outdoor scrimmage on Saturday, but is on the Camels’ roster at 141 (will be moving up to 149). Campbell hosts Grand Canyon on November 1, but Warner will be wrestling in open competitions this year, including at The Citadel on the same day.
  • Robert Parland (University Christian ’13)…As Coker College’s co-leader in matches won in 2015-16 (22), I’d expect to pencil him in as the starter at 197 for the Cobras, which open competition Sunday at The Citadel’s open tournament.
  • Corey Van Dorn (Orange Park ’14)…with 17 matches as a true freshman at Nebraska-Kearney, I’d expect Van Dorn to figure heavily into Friday night’s Blue/Gold Scrimmage. The Lopers’ season begins on November 7 at the Wyoming Cowboy Open in Laramie.
  • Alfred Shavers (Flagler Palm Coast ’15)…no word yet on where he stands as a possible candidate at 125 pounds for Shorter University, but he is on the roster as one of two wrestlers at 125. Shorter’s first competition is at The Citadel on Sunday.
  • Wrestleoffs at Southeastern University were contested, including locals Zack Branning (Flagler Palm Coast ’15), Myckel Hutchinson (Buchholz ’15) and Nathaniel Cleland (Bishop Snyder ’15), on October 17, but no results from those wrestleoffs have been posted on SEU’s website. The Fire’s first scheduled competition is at The Citadel on Sunday.
  • Tristain Sichmeller (Clay ’15) is listed as one of four 165-pounders on the Concordia (NE) roster. The Bulldogs’ season-opener is set for November 7 at the Grand View University Open in Pleasant Hill, IA.
  • Josh Walker (Columbia ’15) is listed as one of two 285-pounders on the Neosho (KS) roster. The Panthers’ season-opener is set for Sunday at the Baker University Open in Baldwin, KS.
  • Jon Whiting (Clay ’15) is listed as one of four 174-pounders on the Lindenwood (IL) roster. The Lynx’ season-opener is set for Saturday at the Patriot Open, hosted by University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY.
  • Not as sure about the ongoing status of Middleburg’s Kyle (’13) and Zach (’15) McClinton, as neither of their names are — as of today — on the Hannibal-LaGrange University roster.
