#TeamSuperCam: Brown Update

So good morning.

Yesterday, Florida High 2017 graduate Cam Brown, a two-time state medalist for the Seminole wrestlers and all-state footballer, had surgery on his left leg, where the surgeons removed the leg two inches above his knee, to fight the growth of osteosarcoma there.

According to the Team Super Cam Facebook page, a prosthetic device should fit him well. He’s out of recovery and in his hospital room and will be able to eat today. Hopefully he’ll be able to be home before July 4th.

In the meantime, there is a fundraiser for Cam scheduled for Saturday, July 29th (that’s four Saturdays from tomorrow, if you read this on the 30th of June), from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Rockhill Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee. More details are on the attached flyer below.

As my #trackdad responsibilities will have come to a close for the summer by that point, in fact I will not even have parental responsibilities on that day with my son up north with his mother, I am going to take my crabby car — which has decided to become temperamental these past two weeks, what with the lovely weather we’ve been having — and come out to this event.

I think you should make plans, too. Hopefully, I will see a large contingent of the north Florida wrestling community in attendance.

Summer Homework

So I’ve made mention of a couple of projects I’ve been working on this summer. One of those has been the season records for 3A-Region 1 (I’ve got eight teams out of District 2 completed and started the ninth team, Ocoee).

The other project is this one, a portion of which is shown here. I’ve been working on career wins lists for every Matmen-area team in the Northeast coverage area (we’re going to have to see how the Northwest area goes — SIDE NOTE: Tate is back in).

So far, I just have the teams in 3A-District 1 compiled. The rest of the districts will be added as the summer wears on.

This Is What It’s All About…

This.

Collins & Brown
Head-to-head rivals for two seasons on the mat, 2017 graduates Kaleb Collins (Clay) and Cam Brown (Florida High) share a less competitive moment at UF-Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where Brown is projected to have surgery next week to, hopefully, fully remove osteosarcoma (bone cancer) that has developed in Brown’s left leg. Collins and Brown faced off six times against one another in the 195-pound weight class over the previous two years, combining for five state Class 1A state medals. Schedules! Need ‘Em

Scheduling is even more interesting than in years past, what with the long-overdue (but, and I remain convinced of this, in the wrong spot of the season) FHSAA dual-meet tournament series beginning in mid-January.

Thus far, we’re still sitting on two schedules — Orange Park and Creekside on the Northeast side. Coaches have my work email, both Northeast and Northwest site emails are published on our main page. Disney’s done, Jazztown is done, and now the push is camps.

We will be following along with the Florida team in both Greco-Roman and freestyle disciplines at junior nationals this week. From the schedules I’ve seen on Track, Greco will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, and freestyle Friday and Saturday. Our ongoing “background projects” — compiling Region 1 results for all 3A teams and compiling career wins lists for area competitors, I just did Fleming Island’s last night — continues.

So let’s get some more schedules going! In the meantime, keep tuning in…

Public Service Announcement

When I was a semi-actual real reporter back in the days of Radio Shack TS-80s and the like, when the equivalent of media dinosaurs roamed the earth, I would go to the state wrestling tournament and occasionally be steamed that certain publications (usually tended to be weeklies, though I’m not throwing all weeklies under the bus) would give members of the coaching staff — that the publication covered — the press pass and space on press row.

So I kind of have a thing about the difference between journalists and “journalists.”

Three years ago, there was a publication in the Northeast coverage area that had a representative of said publication contact the FHSAA, WITHOUT asking me, about a photo pass for Matmen. When I submitted my own request for credentials, I was asked if I needed two passes, for me and for the person that generously asked for one independently of me, since they’d already sent one to that person, apparently, without my ever seeing it.

When I got down to Lakeland, I learned that the person who had asked for the photo pass then, in turn, gave it to a parent of a state-qualifying wrestler that the publication covered, and in fact didn’t show up themselves at all. Then, on day 2 when that wrestler was eliminated from competition on Friday, that photo pass was then given to another parent for another school in the same county. And that was the only way I’d found out that it had been given to a non-media member.

Today doesn’t top that situation in my book, but it comes pretty close.

I have been made aware, just today, that a parent for one of the schools in the north Florida coverage area told a coach for which that parent’s son wrestles in the off-season that said parent would provide me with results of a tournament if the coach would get him floor access to that tournament. That coach has advised me that the parent assured him that said parent had spoken with me.

Let me assure ALL of you, wherever you are reading this, that no parent from this particular HS program has contacted me, at any time, off-season or in-season, let alone the particular parent in question, about anything. And I do not appreciate my website being used in this manner, PARTICULARLY when the promised end product — the results that were going to be, in theory, transmitted to me — have not been sent over.

Is there anything I can do about it? Not much. But what I can do, the decision to do it has already been made.

And I would ask all of you, do not use my website as a way to obtain better seating, or floor access, or a media pass. Real media organizations look down on this sort of thing, and I’ve worked too hard for far too little to have to deal with that, too.
