North Florida Matmen staff report
Heading into December, the battle for team and individual rankings starts to heat up as collegiate teams start to upgrade their competition and solidify their lineups.
And one north Florida wrestler — Coast Guard sophomore Paul Detwiler (Fleming Island ’18) — is among those ranked.
Detwiler is currently ranked ninth in Division III at 184 pounds for the Bears, who are currently ranked 14th as a team. Their next competition is Saturday at the Ted Reese Invitational, hosted by Southern Maine.
Under the leadership of Clay alum Cy Wainwright, Newberry is currently 11th in Division II as a team. The Wolves have four wrestlers that have national rankings, led by Isiah Royal (#1 at 141).
In Division I, Wisconsin — led by Bolles alum Chris Bono — is currently eighth in the national dual-meet rankings (8th in tournament ones as well). The Badgers have six nationally-ranked wrestlers, led by 133-pound Seth Gross (second).
Porter starts for Iowa Lakes: 21st-ranked Iowa Lakes CC (NJCAA) traveled to Iowa Falls for a dual with eighth-ranked Ellsworth Wednesday night, falling by a 34-9 count. In that dual, Iowa Lakes’ Daniel Porter (Clay ’18) started at 125, battling to a 9-7 decision loss against Ellsworth’s Dennis McNeal. The Lakers are off until Saturday, when they will travel to Storm Lake IA for the Buena Vista Open.
