#TheRecap: Matanzas 3rd, University-OC 5th at Clash Ladies

ORANGE CITY — It’s not just the guys who are competing in their first tournament of the season this weekend.

For seven girls contingents of wrestlers, Friday night opened up their tournament season as well, with University-Orange City hosting the Clash of Lady Titans one-day IBT.MATANZAS LOGO

Familiar suspects were in the field’s top five, with defending state champion Dr Phillips winning the event with 295.5 points. University (Orlando) was second at 182, followed by Matanzas in third with 146 points.

Osceola (141 points) and the host Lady Titans (89) rounded out the top five. DeLand was ninth, with 48 points, while Clay cracked the top 10, with 44. Mainland (31 points) was 17th, while Deltona (22) was 18th and New Smyrna Beach (four) 20th in the 21-team field.

Below follows a summary of each weight class that was contested (there were no wrestlers in the 285 bracket):

100 — Osceola’s Kealonie Vega had a pin and 8-3 decision in the final over University (Orlando)’s Tiana Marcillo. The Lady Pirates’ Brittany Lipka was fourth, losing by fall to Zephyrhills’ Kohana Martinez in the place match, while fellow Matanzas wrestler Mary Martins took fifth with a 46-second pin over University (Orlando)’s Li-ani Illa.

106 — Dr Phillips’ Jessica Corredor pinned her way through the draw, with three pins, the last in the final over Deltona’s Dianna Pineda (2 pins prior to final). Clay’s Savannah Huckelberry was sixth, losing by fall in 1:56 in the place match to McKeel’s Ingrid Altamirano, while University-Orange City’s Emily Brumback was the consolation runnerup.

112 — DeLand senior Makenzy Garcia pinned her way into the final, with three falls, but then had to push past West Orange’s Caroline Schmitt, 4-3, for the title. University-Orange City’s Ashley Corujo lost in the quarters, but then had three pins (the third in 2:33 over St Cloud’s Riley Holoubek) to rally back for third, while New Smyrna Beach’s Susan Pacini was the consolation runnerup.

117 — Oak Ridge’s Malaicka Pierre-Louis had three pins, the last in 2:03 over University (Orlando)’s Ally Blake. DeLand’s Abbey Ramirez finished fifth with a forfeit win in the place match over Oak Ridge’s Milagros Rodriguez.

122 — Dr Phillips’ Juliana Diaz pinned her way through the bracket, with a 49-second fall in the final over McKeel’s Angelyn Glazier. Clay’s Kayla Haines lost by fall in the semis to Diaz, but then took third with two pins, falling DeLand’s Naobi Lagos in 3:23 in the place match. Mainland’s Makya Griffin was sixth, losing in the place match by fall in 4:1 to Oak Ridge’s Sue-Yan Rameau.

128 — Mater Lakes Academy’s Carolyna Bellon won four matches by fall, pinning Matanzas’ Riley White (2 pins & decision prior to final) in 1:38 in the title match.

134 — Hagerty’s Jada Llamido picked up four pins to take the championship, falling Dr Phillips’ Jennifer Charles in 2:29 in the final. Clay’s Madisyn Blackburn was fourth after a semifinal loss to Llamido, losing by fall in the place match to Osceola’s Madison Duncan (5:31), while Matanzas’ Angelina Gonzalez was sixth, falling 8-3 in the place match to Dr Phillips’ Zamora St Cyr. Clay’s Jaidyn Vinson was the consolation runnerup.

140 — The hosts’ Kaitlyn Gillespie had three falls to get to the final, then shut out Lady Titans teammate Kaylee Hollifield (2 pins prior to final) by a 10-0 count for the bracket win. Matanzas’ Isabella Tietje, who lost to Hollifield in the semis, took fourth after a loss by pin in the place match to McKeel’s Carli Spivey (2:21).

147 — University (Orlando)’s Rudy Cortes pinned her way through the draw, falling Osceola’s Bella Pancake in 4:29 for the title.

154 — Matanzas’ Angelina Bermudez max-pointed through the bracket, with a forfeit and two pins, the second in 32 seconds over Dr Phillips’ Neikisha Francois.

162 — The Lady Pirates’ Morgan Morrison made it back-to-back Matanzas titles, with a major and two pins, the second in 1:57 for the championship over Dr Phillips’ Armelle Oliantus.

172 — Dr Phillips’ LeAnn Bernard picked up two pins for her title, the second coming in 1:39 over University (Orlando)’s Ariana Vanegas. Mainland’s Megan Jones was third, losing only to Bernard in the semis. She pinned University (Orlando)’s Coralie Delerme in 2:41 for third.

184 — Dr Phillips’ Skyy Gowan pinned her way through the draw, 3 pins in all, with the third in 2:33 over University (Orlando)’s Sierra Chavez.

197 — The Lady Panthers made it three titles in a row, as Xiomara Roddy had three falls, the third of those in 2:12 over Matanzas’ Klarissa Appiah (2 pins prior to final).

222 — Dr Phillips’ Aaliyah Hyacinthe made it four straight for the champions, with three pins, the third in 2:32 in the finals over University (Orlando)’s Kayani Delerme. Clay’s Nora Srader was sixth, losing by fall in 12 seconds in the place match to Osceola’s Natalia Ferrer.
