TALLAHASSEE — With a lot of returning experience back from last year’s Region 1 dual semifinalist team, Yulee was looking to continue to be a threat in 2019-20.
And the Hornets started the ball rolling toward becoming just that on Saturday at the 2019 Cam Brown Seminole Classic, pushing past the rest of the 12-team field to win the team title, defeating Lincoln, 310-284, for first place.
Bainbridge GA was third, with 232.5 points, followed by Marianna at 231.5 in fourth and Mosley fifth with 222. Ft Walton Beach (184), Raines (167.5), host Florida High (136.5), Godby (109), Leon & Lincoln B (42) and Rocky Bayou Christian (35).
Below follows a summary of each weight class:
106 — Mosley’s Cole Bell was 5-0, with all victories by pin, for the title. Bell’s win by fall over runnerup Duhan Lewis of Yulee came in round 3 of the roundrobin. Lincoln’s Ron Taylor placed fourth.
113 — Raines’ DaQuan King was 7-0, with six pins and an 8-6 decision over runnerup Elijah Hendley (6-1, six pins) in the final round of the roundrobin. Yulee’s Jacob Proffit placed fourth.
120 — Lincoln’s Jimmy Martin was 5-0, with four pins to take Pool B, then a fifth pin in the championship match over Pool A champion Trevor Gladson of Yulee (2 pins & injury-default win to take Pool A). Ft Walton Beach’s Brandon Mallin pinned Mosley’s Dan Sanders for third place.
126 — Florida High’s Tyler Reeve max-pointed through a 7-0 weekend, with five pins and two forfeit victories. Reeve’s fall over Yulee’s Tristan Martinez (6-1, 5 pins & forfeit) in the final round was decisive in determining the champ. Ft Walton Beach’s Weston Burbidge was third and Lincoln’s Adam Barnes fourth.
132 — Mosley’s Nick Hejke was 4-0 with four pins to win Pool A, then majored Florida High’s Emil Ganim (2-1, pin & decision to win Pool B), 14-1, in the title match. Leon’s Nolan Zirgibel pinned Marianna’s Dustin Arnold in the third-place match.
138 — Bainbridge’s Kendall Glover pinned or teched his way through the tournament, with a fall in the finals over the Seminoles’ Wright Dean (3 pins & decision to win Pool B). Yulee’s Dietrich Woods pinned Lincoln’s Nathan Draughon in the third-place match.
145 — Mosley’s Logan Gall bonus-pointed through Pool A (2 pins & 2 majors), then added a third pin in the finals over Marianna’s Ethan Heinemann (3 pins to win Pool B) for the title. Ft Walton Beach’s Malachi Santiago falled Yulee’s Dylan Johns for third place.
152 — Ft Walton Beach’s Jean Maldonaldo was 7-0 on the weekend, with four pins and a 15-9 decision over eventual runnerup Aston Ricks (6-1, 5 pins & decision) to win Pool A, then pinned Lincoln’s Patrick Blanca and Bainbridge’s Christopher Chinell in the championship rounds. Ricks won by fall over Chinell, who placed third, and took an 8-1 decision over fourth-place Blanca in those same rounds.
160 — Florida High’s Micah Perdue was 4-0 (2 pins/tech/decision) to win Pool B, then pinned Pool A champ Chase Maddox (4 pins) in the finals to take first place. Bainbridge’s Hunter Harris pinned Godby’s T’Juan Harris in the third-place match.
170 — Marianna’s John Maddox was 7-0 on the weekend, with five pins, a forfeit and tech fall. His round-5 fall over Bainbridge’s Bryan Washington, and subsequent round-7 tech (15-0) over third-place Cayden Bevis of Lincoln were the clinching victories. Godby’s Thomas Branson placed fourth.
182 — Raines’ Raynarde Thomas bonus-pointed through Pool A (3 pins & 19-7 major), then added a fourth fall over Pool B champ Wyatt Yown of Lincoln (3 pins) in the title match. Marianna’s Christian Cosson, the only wrestler in pool to go six minutes with Thomas, falled Yulee’s Keleb Reddish for third.
195 — A wild bracket saw multiple championship trophies on order per the tournament director, as Lincoln’s Tanner Washburn, Marianna’s Corey Davis and Ft Walton Beach’s Kaleb Williams all go 6-1 on the weekend. Washburn had five pins and a 17-2 tech fall to state his case, with his only loss an 8-5 loss to Davis (5 pins otherwise) in the final round. Davis, in turn, had his only loss to Williams, 7-6, in round 3. Williams had four pins and two decisions with his only loss by fall to Washburn in round 1. Mosley’s Noe Pena was fourth.
220 — Yulee’s Bradley Durrance won Pool B with four pins, then picked up a fifth in the championship match over Bainbridge’s Arkeavious Marshall (4 pins to win Pool A). Godby’s Robert Harrell pinned Ft Walton Beach’s Patrick Adams for third place.
285 — Raines’ Jamon Goodwine pinned his way through seven opponents, with five in pools and then pins over Ft Walton Beach’s Spencer Mackenzie and Bainbridge’s Jontavious Pearson in the championship round for the title. Godby’s Joshua Yarbrough, who lost to Goodwine in round 1 of pools, falled third-place Pearson and won by injury-default over fourth-place Mackenzie.
