#TheRecap: Golden Eagles Get First Close Look At South Dade

North Florida Matmen staff report

HOMESTEAD — Take the 9-1 weekend that Fleming Island had at the District 16 Duals, hosted by South Dade, even with the Golden Eagles’ 43-19 loss to the Buccaneers, and it’s a pretty solid weekend.

Then add that three starters were missing all weekend for Fleming (106, 126 and 182) and add a fourth starter lost for the second day of competition.

A lot of teams would love to finish 9-1 at a tournament, with four starters out. That’s how the Golden Eagles completed things at South Dade. On Friday, Fleming defeated Hollywood Hills (78-6), Southridge (57-15), Osceola (51-24), Wellington (41-25) and Miami Palmetto (53-15).

Saturday saw the Golden Eagles defeat Columbus (59-18), Miami Beach (57-21), Palm Harbor University (40-31) and Southwest Miami (36-27) before falling to the multiple-time state champion hosts, 43-19.

Fleming’s strength up top paved the way individually. Raul Gonzalez (285) was the only Golden Eagle to go 10-0 on the weekend, with five pins, a major and four decisions.

After making way for teammate Ethan Hoffstetter in round 1, Campbell commit Chad Nix (220) bonus-pointed through the rest of the tournament, going 9-0 with three pins and a major.

Two Fleming starters had just one loss on the weekend.

At 145, Gannon Janssen was 9-1, with seven pins and a decision. Janssen’s only loss came against multiple-time state champion Bretli Reyna in the South Dade dual, while Gavin Smith (170/182) was 7-1, with three pins and two decisions. Smith’s only loss came in the dual against Palm Harbor.

Four Golden Eagle wrestlers had two losses.

Tanner Hill (152) and Jeffrey Lascano (195) were both 8-2. Hill had three pins and four divisions, with losses to Wellington’s Justin Henry and 2019 state runnerup Joshua Swan of South Dade. Lascano had four pins, two majors and a decision, with two losses on Friday against Southridge and Osceola; he then won seven matches in a row.

Additionally, Luke Chop (160) and Hunter Williams (170/182) were both 6-2. Chop gave way in the opening rounds of both days to teammate Jhoel Robinson, then went on to record four pins and a decision, with losses to Miami Palmetto and South Dade. Williams had four pins, a tech and decision in starter duty, taking losses against Palm Harbor and Southwest Miami.

Isaac Padgett was 7-3 for Fleming Island at 132, with four pins and two decisions. Ryan Hobson (120, 4 pins & decision) was 6-4 and Dalton Baysinger (138, 4 pins & decision) 5-4 on the weekend for the Golden Eagles. Josh Sandoval (182) primarily saw fill-in time on Friday, going 4-0 with three pins.

Fleming Island is now off until Wednesday, when it will travel to Matanzas for competition in the St Johns River Conference tournament, which this year is IBT in format.
