GULF BREEZE — There’s something about defending the home mat that keeps teams just a bit sharper.
On Saturday, at the nine-team Gulf Breeze Duals, the host Dolphins were 5-0, with an average margin of victory of 46.2 points in their dual opener, winning the title in the final round with a 59-24 dual victory over 2A-District 1 rival Crestview.
That victory was preceded by dual wins over Milton (66-15), Alabama’s W.S. Neal (65-18), Tate (70-12) and Mississippi’s Ocean Springs (58-18).
Leading the charge for the Dolphins was Garrett Ruddick (152), who “max-pointed” (scored 6 points in each dual meet that team competed in during a given event) through the day with a 5-0 record that included four pins.
Ruddick wasn’t the only Gulf Breeze wrestler to go 5-0 on the day; he was joined by Nate Weber (106, pin & tech) and Kelly Scanlon (132, 3 pins & tech).
Logan Merritt (120, pin) and Colson Elliott (126, 3 pins & major) were both 4-0 for Gulf Breeze, while Gabe Trostle (145, 2 pins & decision) was 3-0 in a regular role for the Dolphins. Micah Barker (182, 3 pins) and Julian McCully (195, 2 pins) were both 4-1, while Elijah Johnson (113) and Dylan Lawrence (138, 2 pins & tech) were both 3-1.
Milton was only able to cover six weights in wrestling four duals on the day, going 0-4 as a team.
However, of those six weights, two of the Panthers filling them were 4-0 on the day. Daniel McDonal (170) pinned his way through the day, with four falls in all, while Brandon Nicholson (138, 3 pins) and decision) also had a 4-0 day for Milton.
Editor’s Note: Only two area teams submitted complete results from the event; we did not get all scoresheets from the host, all results that we have were as reported by three teams on Trackwrestling (Gulf Breeze, Milton and W.S. Neal). Four teams in the coverage area have incomplete results, and therefore could not be reported in this story (which was part of the reason for its delay).
