TRAVELERS REST, SC — Yulee is just looking, as coach Brandon Crowder mentioned Monday night, to get better each week.
Of necessity, that means getting better every year. And, compared to last year’s performance at the Devil Dog two-day tournament at Travelers Rest HS, the Hornets are accomplishing their goal.
The Hornets were 11th in the 17-team tournament, finishing with 98 points as a team. Eastside (SC) held off River Bluff behind a late rush in the final round, 253-218.5, for the team title, with the hosts third at 151. Indian Land (144.5) and Cherokee GA (142) rounded out the top five.
Below follows a summary of the Hornets’ weekend:
106 — Lewis Duhan was 3-2 on the weekend, with three pins and a pair of losses by fall. Both of the wrestlers to which he lost had 4-1 tournaments.
113 — Jacob Proffit was 0-2, with losses by fall to opponents that were 4-1 and 3-2.
120 — Trevor Gladson was 2-2, with two pins and two losses by pin. Both of the wrestlers to which he lost had 4-1 tournaments.
126 — Tristen Martinez was 1-3, with a win by fall and three losses by fall. The opponents to which he lost were 3-2, 4-1 and 3-2, respectively.
132 — Bryce Bees was 0-1, with a loss by fall; he did not engage in further competition beyond that first round.
138 — Dietrich Woods was 0-2, with losses by fall to opponents that both 4-1 on the weekend.
145 — Jesse Johnson was 3-2, with two pins and an 8-6 decision, and two losses by fall. The opponents to which he lost were also both 3-2 on the weekend.
152 — Aston Ricks was 2-2, with a pin and 8-7 decision for victories and losses by 13-5 major and 8-6 decision to opponents that were both 4-1 on the weekend.
160 — Isaiah Shook was 1-2, with a win by fall and losses by pin to opponents that were both 4-1.
170 — Daniel Lopez was 0-3, with losses by fall to opponents that were 2-3, 1-2 and 5-0 (eventual champion Kaleb Horn of Blue Ridge), respectively.
182 — Keleb Reddish was 1-2, with a win by pin and two losses by pin. The wrestlers to which he lost both had 4-1 tournaments.
195 — Joseph Michel was 0-3, with losses by fall to opponents that were 4-1, 4-1 and 3-2, respectively.
220 — Bradley Durrance was 4-1, with four pins in 3:17 and a loss by fall in his first match. The opponent to which he lost also finished 4-1 on the weekend.
