#TheRecap: UC’s Gustilo Finalist At Fandetti-Richardson Brawl

North Florida Matmen staff report

JOHNSON CITY, TN — Teams under the direction of Wes Champ have, for the past couple of seasons, taken two weigh-in dates and made a trip north to Tennessee — Champ’s home state — for competition in the Fandetti-Richardson Brawl.

This year, it was University Christian’s turn to make the road trip, as the Christians engaged in duals competition on Friday and the Brawl on Saturday.

The Friday duals had tournament organizers move the Christians — with just five wrestlers on the team — into a mix-and-match team to get them matches. On Friday night, UC’s Egan Gustilo was 2-0, while Jayce Paridon and Jackie Dinh were both 1-1. Avery Miller and Mathew Flores were each 0-2.

On Saturday, the group was able to compete as a team again, as University Christian was 15th out of 26 teams in the one-day tournament. The Christians scored 52 points as a team. Christian Brothers (TN) held off another Tennessee side, Bradley Central, 232.5-229.5, for the team title.

Below follows a summary of the three* UC wrestlers’ tournaments:

106 — Paridon was 3-2 and placed fourth. He reached the semifinals with pins over Heritage’s Isaac Carpenter (1:25) and Jefferson Cty’s Dylan Gray (1:33), plus a 7-2 decision over Pigeon Forge TN’s Hunter Gentry in the quarters. Paridon then lost by fall to eventual champ Ethan Wilson of Bradley Central in 2:38 in the semis, and then lost by fall in the third-place match to non-scoring wrestler Ethan Lipsey, also of Bradley Central, in 1:33.

113 — Gustilo was 4-1 and placed second. He had falls over Independence’s Logan Shand (:26) and Sevier Cty’s Logan Fillbach (3:20) to reach the quarters, then shut out Jefferson Cty’s Roger Watkins, 11-0, to get to the semis, where he took down Fort Mill’s Sebastian Colon, 8-4. In the final, Gustilo sustained an 8-5 loss to Bradley Central’s Easton Lipsey.

182 — Dinh was 2-3 in the tournament. After losses by fall to Greer’s Ellison Flores (eventual runnerup; 1:47) and Lee’s Austen Arnold (1:52), Dinh had pins over Sevier Cty’s Connor Callahan (3:41) and Bradley Central’s Cody McDaniel (:48), finishing the day with a 9-2 loss to Jefferson Cty’s Hunter Bryant.

* – There were no Saturday results recorded for Flores.

In the women’s division, Miller was 3-1 on the day and placed third in the 125-lb weight class. Miller was 2-0 in pool competition to reach the semifinals, with a 13-2 major over Heritage’s Agnaee Zavala and fall in 1:07 over West Henderson’s Marissa Connelly. In the semis, Miller lost by fall to eventual champion Robin Yunis of Rossview (1:09) but bounced back for third by shutting out Independence’s Baylee Peterson, 13-0.

Thanks for reading. No girls’ division results were transmitted by Coach Champ. If you can rectify that with him, I would be happy to update. Based on the results he sent me, I have no records. However it would not make sense to just make the trip on the Friday.
