SODDY DAISY, TN — The Laxton coaching family and the program at Soddy Daisy HS have had a long relationship.
That continued this past weekend, as South Walton coach Travis Laxton took a young group of Seahawks to the Soddy Daisy Showdown. With two of Tennessee’s strongest teams in attendance in the 12-team tournament, among others, South Walton struggled to find their footing, placing 12th with 26 points.
The hosts held off Baylor School (TN), 164.5-155.5 for the title, with Alabama’s Bob Jones third at 119.
Below follows a summary of the Seahawks’ tournaments:
106 — Brett Canut was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses by fall on the front to East Ridge TN’s Adeiso Perez (eventual-3rd; :32) and on the back to Whitwell TN’s Brendyn Garten (4:21).
113 — CJ Inman was 0-2 in the tournament and one match from placing, with losses by fall on the front to Sequatchie TN’s Johnathan Bloom (3:57) and on the back to Whitwell’s Alexander George (eventual-3rd; 1:00).
120 — Randall Yates was 0-2 in the tournament and one match from placing, with losses by fall on the front to Baylor’s Elijah Turner (eventual-3rd; 1:09) and on the back to East Hamilton TN’s Christopher Roberson (eventual-4th).
132 (no Seahawks at 126) — Canyon Dart was 1-2 in the tournament and one match from placing. After a bye, Dart pinned Howard School TN’s Dan Tumlin in 2:00 to get to the semis, where he lost by fall to Sequatchie’s Paxton Albright (2:35). Dart then took a 15-2 loss in the consi semis to eventual-4th Dylan Ricker of McMinn TN.
138 — Ryan Kurfirst was 1-2 in the tournament and one match from placing. Kurfirst fell to Ooltewah TN’s eventual-4th, Roman Evans, by 17-3 major in the quarters. He then pinned Howard’s Gabe Rains (3:18) in the consi quarters before losing to Warren TN’s Alec Smith (1:54), the eventual-3rd.
145 — Ashton Nunes was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses by fall on the front to East Ridge’s Titus Moschkau (2:00) and on the back to Warren’s De’Ark Lewis (:50).
152 — John Lopez was 1-2 in the tournament. He lost on the front in the round of 16 to East Ridge’s Colletin Bollin (4:00), but, after a bye, decisioned Howard’s Jacaris Clay, 10-7, in consi round 2. Lopez then fell to Sequatchie’s Kaleb Edwards (1:55) in the consi quarters.
160 — Seth Marshall was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses by fall on the front to the hosts’ Landon Lewis (eventual runnerup; :22) and on the back to Warren’s Stephen Curtis (1:58) in consi round 2.
170 — Dylan Garner was 2-2 and placed fourth in the weight class. After a bye into the quarters, Garner pinned McMinn’s Adam Jaynes (3:13), but then fell in the semis to Baylor’s Jason Motley, the eventual runnerup, by a 13-5 count. Garner edged Warren’s Noah O’Shields, 3-2, in the consi semis, to assure a place finish. He then lost by tech fall to the hosts’ Noah Addison, 17-2 in 3:45, in the third-place match.
182 — Noah Gabbard was 1-2 in the tournament. Gabbard pinned Warren’s Conner Smith (2:50) in the round of 16, but then lost by fall to Warren’s Ike Gillentine (1:23) in the quarters and fell to East Ridge’s Lloyd Pinheiro (:29) in the consi quarters.
220 (no Seahawks at 195) — Nick Lee was 0-2 in the tournament and was one match short of placing. After a bye into the semis, Lee lost by fall (1:32) to eventual runnerup Jonathan Snodgrass of Baylor; Lee then took a second loss by fall (:19) to eventual-3rd Jermichael Young of Howard.
285 — Andrew Thompson was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses by fall on the front to Howard’s Ontarrious Woodruff (eventual runnerup; :41) and on the back to Warren’s Jeremiah Miller (1:00).
