North Florida Matmen staff report
FLEMING ISLAND — The bracketing of the 2A-Region 1 tournament sets up quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in single-elimination format.
It’s not formatted for a fourth (or potentially a fifth) dual. But that doesn’t mean that teams — particularly if they’ve traveled some and want a bit more bang from the buck than a single quarterfinal loss — won’t take a shot at adding a second dual if they can get it.
That was the case Thursday night in two spaces, one at Fleming Island, where 3A-Region 1 quarterfinalists and former district rivals Buchholz and Oakleaf squared off against one another, with the Bobcats taking a 45-30 win.
Buchholz got pins from Siddharth Bianchi (106), Venumadhava Mirel (113), Aiden Moore (120), Timothy Bowen (145), Matthew Vann (170) and Armando Acosta (182) and a 5-0 win from Jason Martin at 195 in the dual win.
Oakleaf answered with pins from Josh Murrell (285), Jason Stewart (126), Logan Gilbert (138) and James McClintic (160).
Weeki Wachee 54, Pedro Menendez 30: At Atlantic, Weeki Wachee — which had traveled across nearly the entire breadth of the state to get to Port Orange — took advantage of a second dual against the Falcons.
After the teams traded points at 160 and 170, with Connor Spossey winning by fall at 170 for Menendez, Weeki Wachee won seven of the next eight weights, four of those by fall.
Pedro Menendez took forfeits at 285, 138 and 152; the Falcons’ Logan Meehan added a pin at 132.
