OVIEDO — It didn’t take long, after getting knocked out of the FHSAA 3A dual team tournament series, for Flagler Palm Coast to get back on a winning track.
The Bulldogs dominated the scene Saturday at the Showdown at O-Town, with five double-digit wins in the one-day duals tournament.
Flagler Palm Coast defeated Auburndale (72-6), Rockledge (57-27), Evans (51-27, its closest dual of the tournament), Lake Brantley (50-24) and Oviedo (52-22), good for an average margin of 34.4 points per dual.
Six Bulldogs were 5-0 on the day, with two — Kole Hannant (106, 3 pins) and Joseph Rizzo (19th-3A at 113, 2 pins) — “max-pointing” (scoring 6 dual team points in every dual the team contested).
Brendan Buckles (126, 4 pins & decision), Kyle Peacock (8th-3A at 138, 2 pins & tech), Blane DeFord (18th-3A at 152, 3 pins/tech/decision) and Garrick Schwartz (170, 2 pins & major) were also 5-0 on the day.
John Hald (120, pin & tech), Felipe Costa (145, 2 pins/major/decision) and AJ Cinelli (285, 2 pins) were each 4-1, while Marcelo Gonzalez (160, 2 pins) was 3-2.
Below follows a summary of each dual:
Auburndale: The Bulldogs allowed just one forfeit victory, as all 12 of the FPC wrestlers competing on the day scored maximum points. Hannant, Buckles, Peacock, Costa, DeFord, Gonzalez and Cinelli all had pins in the victory.
Rockledge: FPC had an 18-0 lead from the jump thanks to pins from Rizzo and Buckles; after Rockledge cut the gap to 23-12, the Bulldogs went on a 24-0 run from 152 through 182, with pins from DeFord, Gonzalez and Dalton Schell (182). Hannant added a fall at the end of the dual and Peacock took a 17-1 tech fall.
Evans: The Bulldogs trailed for the first time on the day, 6-0 and 12-6, but then ripped off 27 points in a row. Evans cut the gap to 33-27 with three weights left, but the Bulldogs won by forfeit at all three of those. Buckles, DeFord and Schwartz won by pins, while Costa pushed through to a 4-3 decision.
Lake Brantley: While the dual was tied at 6 early on, FPCHS then scored 17 in a row and didn’t trail again, although Lake Brantley would get as close as 27-24 before the Bulldogs went on a 23-0 run. Buckles and Costa won by pins, while DeFord (15-0) and Hald (21-6) both had techs and Schwartz had a 16-4 major.
Oviedo: After spotting the hosts a 6-0 lead with a forfeit, Flagler Palm Coast won three in a row to build a 13-6 lead and never trailed after that, closing the dual out with a 27-point run. Peacock, Schwartz, Cinelli, Hannant, Rizzo and Hald all won by fall, with Costa taking a 15-5 major and both DeFord (5-2) and Buckles (7-6) winning by decision.
The Bulldogs are off until Wednesday, when they host Matanzas in the #BattleForFlagler.
