WAYCROSS, GA — Ware County (GA) was hosting its Senior Night Tuesday night, just a couple of days after a top-five showing in the Georgia 5A state duals tournament.
But Yulee put a bit of a damper on the celebration, defeating the Gators, 46-36 and Appling County GA, 60-18, gaining a small measure of revenge for Ware’s having beaten the Hornets a month earlier in the finals of the Yulee Duals.
First up was Appling; after spotting the Pirates the first six points of the dual, Yulee had a five-match max-point streak. Appling would cut the lead to 30-18, but the Hornets would close out with another five-match win streak. Bradley Durrance (220), Lewis Duhan (106), Jacob Proffit (113), Dylan Johns (138) and Isaiah Shook (170) all had pins and Dietrich Woods (145) won by injury-default.
In the dual with Ware, Yulee gave up first points but then took a 24-6 lead. Ware tied the dual on three forfeits, but then the Hornets scored 22 in a row to clinch the win. Durrance (220), Darquill Brown (285), Jacob Proffit (113), Bryce Bees (138) and Aston Ricks (160) all won by fall and Johns took a 21-9 major at 138.
Yulee hit the mats again Wednesday night, this time with a quad meet at home.
Palatka tri-meet: The host Panthers swept past First Academy (54-18) and First Baptist Christian (42-34) in a tri-meet. In the opening dual of the night, the Crusaders took a 48-24 win over First Academy.
Palatka never trailed after taking a 12-6 lead at 145, as Adaris Medina won by fall at that weight for the Panthers. Brady Weaver (152), Samuel Lafferty (170), Mikada Harvey (106), Ontarriyus Reid (120) and Drevon Wallace (126) each had pins in the victory.
In the opening dual, First Baptist Christian scored four max-point wins in a row between 138 and 160, then won four out of five between 182 and 106 to take the dual. Jordan Mills (138), Kaleb McHone (145), Tyler Reittinger (152), Nathaniel Varol (182) and Gabe Haren (106) all had pins for the Crusaders.
The final dual saw FBCA take a 36-0 lead at the start, sweeping between 138 through 182, but the Panthers came back with seven max-point wins of their own for the tri-meet sweep. Jack Tilton (195), Lane Heuer (220), Marlon Williams (285) and Harvey all took pins in the victory.
Palatka will travel to Pedro Menendez on Thursday night, while First Baptist Christian will compete in Seabreeze’s Ray Hollingsworth Duals on Saturday.
St Augustine 44, Pedro Menendez 24: At St Augustine, in the crosstown rivalry, the host Yellow Jackets ran out to a 27-0 lead; the Falcons would cut it to 27-18, but St Augustine would take three forfeits down the stretch to secure the dual win.
Carlos Quintanal (138), Gabe Galloza (145), Hayden Yanni (152) and Clint Griffin (160) all won by fall, while Christian Jackson (132) took a 12-10 win by decision.
Connor Spossey (182), Logan Parham (195), Dane Litzinger (220) and Gavin Rosario (126) all won by fall for the Falcons.
Both teams were participants in the Orange Park Duals on Wednesday night.
