North Florida Matmen staff report
FT MYERS — When you start a lineup that has just seven wrestlers, on a regular basis, in it, and take it to a two-day duals tournament, winning as a team is really difficult to do.
Raines made it happen five times over the weekend, going 5-5 at the Wolfpack Duals, hosted by South Ft Myers HS on Friday and Saturday.
In Pool B competition on Friday, the Vikings started off with a 36-30 win over North Ft Myers, but then lost to Riverdale B (48-30), Immokalee (48-36), Ft Myers (64-10) and Port St Lucie (47-28).
The 1-4 pool record sent Raines into the White pool for Saturday’s competition, against more similarly-situated teams, and there the Vikings fared far better, going 4-1 on the second day. After a 33-24 loss to Westminster Christian, a 1A-Region 4 qualifier, Raines defeated Evangelical Christian (42-0), Dunbar (18-12), Belen Jesuit (36-24) and Naples (36-35 in criteria).
Five of Raines’ seven starters won at least eight matches over the course of the weekend, and of those five, they had a combined record of 46-3.
Kyle Hopkins (120/126, 6 pins & decision) and Raynarde Thomas (170, 4 pins/tech/major/decision) were both 10-0 over the course of the two days for the Vikings.
Additionally, Jamari Watson (195/220, 8 pins) and Jamon Goodwine (285, 4 pins & major) were both 9-1 for Raines, with DaQuan King (113, 4 pins) contributing an 8-1 record on the weekend. Every Raines regular starter had at least one pin during the tournament.
