CAIRO, GA — Leon placed fourth and University Christian was eighth in the 11-team Syrupmaker Invitational, held on Saturday.
The Lions had 25 points and University Christian had 15, with Maclay’s JV team also competing in the tournament, taking 11th (zero points). Colquitt County GA was first with 76 points, while Valdosta was second with 49.
Below follows a partial summary of the tournament, based solely upon results reported by the Lions and Christians’ head coaches:
106: University Christian’s Jayce Paridon was 3-1 and placed third. On the front side, Paridon won over Thomas County Central (TCC)’s Jeremy Roberts in the quarters, but then fell to Colquitt’s Gabe Freeman in the semis. Paridon came back for third behind victories over Valdosta’s John Nelson in the consi semis and over Roberts in a rematch to take third.
120: The Christians’ Egan Gustilo was 2-1 and was the runnerup in the weight class. Gustilo had wins over Valdosta’s Zion Leggett in the quarters and Colquitt’s James Vaughan in the semis, but then lost in the final to Valdosta’s Keith Davis. Leon’s Alex Crago was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses to Cairo’s Miguel Bastida (18-3 tech fall) and by injury dfefault to Leggett in the consis.
126: Leon’s Nolan Zirgibel was the weight-class champion, with three victories. Zirgibel falled Tift’s Marcelo Manzano (3:10, quarters), then took majors over Colquitt’s Michael Bledsoe (14-6, semis) and the hosts’ James Cartwright, 17-9, in the championship.
138: Leon’s Hudson Large was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses on the front to the hosts’ Kason Sellers (17-2 tech fall) and on the back to Bainbridge’s Renee Fillingame (:52) in the consis.
145: The Lions’ Ethan Eudy was 3-1 and placed second in the weight class. Eudy had pins over Tift’s Madison Cox (3:25, round of 16), TCC’s Brice Hopper (1:47, quarters) and Colquitt’s Jordyn Edwards (1:23, semis) before taking a 17-2 tech fall loss to Colquitt’s Deontae Edwards in the title match.
152: Leon’s Cole Dalton was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses by fall on the front to the hosts’ Peeples (2:52) and on the back to Colquitt’s Kiearis Daniels (4:39) in the consis.
160: UC’s Matthew Flores was 0-2 in the tournament, with losses to Colquitt’s Nelson Salaz in the semis and Pelham’s Lavorris Hines in the consi semis. There was no fifth-place match.
170: The Lions’ Noah Bounds was 3-2 and placed fourth. After wins in the round of 16 over Pelham’s Jeremiah Battle (1:46) and quarters over TCC’s Tyrique Nixon (5:13), Bounds took a 16-8 semifinal loss to Tift’s Zach Carter. In the consis, Bounds pinned TCC’s Ken’yatta McCloud in 2:32 before falling to Tift’s Andrew Taylor in 43 seconds in the third-place match.
182: After an opening-round loss in the round of 16 to eventual champ Antoine Scott of Valdosta, UC’s Jackie Dinh wouldn’t lose again, with four victories in the consis to place third. Dinh had wins over the hosts’ Brandon Green, Colquitt’s Jose Camarena-Moreno, Tift’s David Burney and Cook’s Caleb Duggan in the third-place match.
195: Leon’s Josh Seabrooks was 3-1 and was the runnerup in the weight class. Seabrooks pinned TCC’s Kevin Turner (4:49, round of 16), then decisioned the hosts’ Eli Pyrz, 5-0, in the quarters. Seabrooks then pinned Tift’s Taquan Ellis in 3:41 in the semis, then lost by fall (5:59) in the championship match to Bainbridge’s Arkeavious Marshall.
