PONTE VEDRA — The student gets chances at time, to become the teacher. Or beat him.
That happened Thursday night at Ponte Vedra, where St Augustine — coached by SAHS alum Will Rinchiusa — overcame the host Sharks, coached by Josean Gonzalez, who coached Rinchiusa in his previous HC gig with the Yellow Jackets, in taking a 37-30 dual win.
The Yellow Jackets led or were tied throughout the dual, finally seizing control with a 15-3 run between 106 through 126. Gabriel Galloza (145), Hayden Yanni (152), Ryan Murphy (182), Gavin Barro (106) and Wilson Nguyen (120) had falls for St Augustine, while Jaquan Whitty took an 8-0 major at 195 and Jordan Levy added an 8-1 win at 126.
Ponte Vedra, wrestling a bit short-handed, was still in it until nearly the end, with a pin from Joseph Skinner (160) and decisions from Harlan Nikolov (4-0 at 285), Julian Villegas (9-5 at 113), Jackson Shewey (11-9 at 132) and Alex De Almeida (10-8 at 138).
The Yellow Jackets and Sharks both competed in the Flagler Rotary over the weekend.
New Smyrna Beach 55, First Academy 6: On the road in Orlando, the Barracudas rolled to victory, allowing just one First Academy victory.
Jace Engberg (120), Michael Shannon (126), Jackson Farmer (145) and Matthew Guest (152) all had pins for NSB, which also got a 12-3 major from Thomas Connell at 170 and a decision from Hunter Childress (9-7 at 138), plus four forfeits.
New Smyrna Beach also competed at Flagler Rotary over the weekend.
