North Florida Matmen staff report
GULF SHORES, AL — When Pace got a chance to flex its muscle on the mats last weekend, the Patriots were usually more than ready for the task of winning the Dolphin Duals two-day tournament just over the Alabama state line.
In four contested duals — two teams forfeited to the Patriots during the weekend — Pace had nearly a 50-point margin of victory in taking the title, with dual wins over Baker AL (67-10), Robertsdale (55-24), Vestavia Hills’ 2nd group (64-18) and then Gulf Breeze (75-6 in the effective championship match) in the final.
Pace had five max-pointing wrestlers over the course of the weekend, as Seth O’Gara (138, 4 pins), Brody Andrews (160/170, 4 pins), Gabe Jacobs (182/195, 4 pins), Wyatt Dillon (195/220, 4 pins) and Cam Goodenow (285, 3 pins) all were max-pointers, with O’Gara, Andrews, Jacobs and Dillon pinning all opponents put in front of them.
Ethan Billhimer (126/132, 2 pins & decision) and Joseph Cortez (152, 2 pins/major/decision) also were 6-0 on the weekend, while Derrick Lancero (120, 2 pins & major) and Atticus Waters (132, 2 pins) both were 5-0.
Jacob Hobbs (113, 2 pins) and Camden Friend (145, major & decision) were both 5-1 for Pace, while Natalie Lugo (106, pin) was 4-2. Krystopher Collins (220) was 3-2 and Michael Burgess (160/170) chipped in a 3-3 weekend for the Patriots.
In the dual against the Dolphins, Pace racked up nine pins, with Lugo, Hobbs, Lancero, Waters, Cortez, Andrews, Jacobs and Dillon all winning by fall, with Billhimer taking a 15-8 decision.
Other than against the Patriots, Gulf Breeze had success over the course of the weekend as well, going 5-1 with victories over Vestavia (48-30), Satsuma (39-35), Baker (53-30), Gulf Shores (52-30) and Baldwin County (50-23).
Ian Daily (132, pin/major/decision) and Dylan Lawrence (138/145, 4 pins & decision) were each 5-0 for the Dolphins.
Colson Elliott (126, 2 pins), Garret Rudick (152, 2 pins), Sean Jones (170, 2 pins/tech/decision) and Julian McCully (195, 5 pins) all were 5-1, while Logan Merritt (120, 2 pins & tech) and Mason Bourgeois (160, 3 pins & decision) were each 4-2 for Gulf Breeze. Jones had the Dolphins’ lone points against Pace, with a win by fall.
Tate also competed over the course of the weekend; two duals were reported to Trackwrestling. Efforts were unsuccessfully made to get the rest of the dual results.
Pace is off until Saturday, when the Patriots will compete at Chiles’ Timberwolf Duals. Pace traveled to W S Neal HS in Alabama for a Tuesday-night dual.
