DADE CITY — Suwannee compiled a 4-1 record and Belleview was 3-2 at the one-day Pasco Duals tournament on Saturday at Pasco HS.
Both teams fell to East Lake, the Diamondbacks in Round 1 (68-6) and Bulldogs in Round 5 (38-30). Suwannee otherwise had wins over Central (Brooksville) (71-12), Villages (39-36), Largo (63-18) and Fivay (49-27) over the course of the day.
Belleview took wins over Citrus (43-33) and Gulf (72-12) in Rounds 2 & 3; after a 40-33 loss in Round 4 to Lemon Bay, the Diamondbacks turned back Gaither, 42-38, in the final round.
Suwannee had two wrestlers that were “max-pointers” (scored 6 dual team points in every dual) in Foster Swain (106, 3 pins) and Timothy Jolicoeur (126, 3 pins). Jaxon Sansouci (132, 2 pins & 2 decisions) also was 5-0, while Xander Kirkland (120, 2 pins & decision) was 3-0 in a part-time appearance.
Brody Boehm (113, 2 pins & major), Tyson Musgrove (138/145, 3 pins) and Blaine Howard (182/195, pin & 2 decisions) each were 4-1 for Suwannee, while Austin Howard (152, tech & decision) was 3-1 and Caleb Parsons (145/152, 3 pins) and Dustin Wood (170, 2 pins & decision) were both 3-2 for the Bulldogs.
Zackery Young (106, 2 pins) was a 5-0 max-pointer for Belleview and the Diamondbacks’ only unbeaten on the day.
Nathan Halstead (195, pin & decision) was 4-1 for the Diamondbacks, while Andrew Davis (126/132, pin & decision), Zach McLaughlin (138, 2 pins & major), Shaun Young (160/170, 2 pins) and Cornelius Bentley-Greene (160/170, 2 pins) were all 3-2. Tyler Gerard (132) had a 2-2 weekend as well for Belleview.
Below follows a brief summary of each round:
Suwannee-Central: The Bulldogs had 12 bonus-point wins, with Swain, Sansouci, Parsons, Jim King (160) and Wood taking pins over a short-handed Central team.
Belleview-East Lake: The Diamondbacks got off to a rough start, as only Zackery Young won by fall.
Suwannee-Villages: The Bulldogs got out to a 30-0 lead behind their lower-weight strength and made it stand up, with pins from Boehm, Kirkland, Jolicoeur and Musgrove, plus a 6-5 win from King.
Belleview-Citrus: After spotting their opponents a 15-0 lead, Belleview won five of the last seven to surge ahead of its short-handed opponent. Solomon took the Diamondbacks’ only pin, with Zach McLaughlin had a 24-14 major and Davis took a 6-4 win.
Suwannee-Largo: After spotting first points, the Bulldogs ran off 27 in a row and expanded the lead from there, on pins from Jolicoeur, Parsons, Wood, Blaine Howard, Cayden Williams (285; his first HS contested victory) and Boehm.
Belleview-Gulf: Other than pins at 145 and 152, Belleview romped in Round 3, with pins from Zach McLaughlin, Shaun Young, Bentley-Greene and Mark Willis (113).
Suwannee-Fivay: The Bulldogs won every weight class between 106 through 152, with pins from Jolicoeur, Sansouci, Musgrove, Parsons, Swain and Kirkland, with a 9-1 major from Boehm and decisions from Wood (5-4) and Blaine Howard (10-3).
Belleview-Lemon Bay: The Manta Rays used a 25-point run between 145 and 182, but needed 10 points at 113 and 120 to close out the win. Davis, Zach McLaughlin and Young had pins, while Halstead had a 4-1 win at 195.
Suwannee-East Lake: The Bulldogs started off with a 9-0 lead, but East Lake won six of eight matches to take the win. Musgrove and Swain had pins for Suwannee, while Sansouci (10-7 at 132), Austin Howard (10-5 at 152), Blaine Howard (7-5 at 182) and Kirkland (15-11 at 120) all had decisions.
Belleview-Gaither: The Diamondbacks used forfeits at the lowers, plus Michael Ventre’s pin at 120, clinched the victory. Eric McLaughlin, Shaun Young and Bentley-Greene also had pins for the Diamondbacks.
