#TheRecap: Columbia 4-1, Union 2-3 At Villages

THE VILLAGES — In the final tournament of the regular season for Columbia and the final tournament of the year for Union County, the short-handed Columbia Tigers took four of five duals and the Union Tigers were 2-3 in the T.D. Talbott Legion Duals Saturday at Villages HS.


After an opening-round loss to Heritage, 38-30, Columbia took victories over Union (53-18) in round 2, The Master’s Academy (60-12), Leesburg (57-11) and Belleview (57-24) to go 4-1 on the day.

Four Columbia wrestlers were 5-0 on the day, with three of them “max-pointing” (scoring 6 team dual points in all duals in which the team competed). Obie Smith (152, 4 pins), Shawn Raggins (195, 3 pins) and Jaycob Jones (285, 3 pins) were Columbia’s max-pointers, while Joseph Rice (170/182, 3 pins & decision) joined them as a 5-0 unbeaten wrestler.

Brett Millard (106, 2 pins & tech), Alex McGuigan (138, 4 pins), Thomas Greene (145, 4 pins) and Preston O’Quinn (160/170, 2 pins) were all 4-1 for Columbia, while Cooper Mote (126, 2 pins & decision) and Jesse Braden (220, 2 pins) were both 3-2. Jamari Jones (160/170, pin) added a 2-2 day for the Lake City-based Tigers.

Union Cty opened with a 45-21 win over The Master’s Academy; after the loss to Columbia, the Lake Butler-based Tigers lost to Heritage (72-6) and Weeki Wachee (54-24), with a round 4 win over South Lake, 36-30.

Robert Young (138/145, pin) was 3-1 for Union Cty, while Kale Waters (113), Davalier Blocker (220, pin) and Daegan Gainey (285) were each 3-2.

As an independent team, Union Cty’s season came to an end at Villages; as for Columbia, the Tigers will compete in the 2A-District 2 tournament at Lincoln on Saturday.
