LAKE CITY — A deep football run for Columbia didn’t keep its wrestlers from a home victory Wednesday night.

In what’s become something of a rivalry over the past several seasons in north-central Florida, the Tigers were able to hold off Buchholz, 42-40, in the season opener for both sides.

Despite having a few starters missing due to football needs, Columbia scored seven max-point wins for the victory. Six of those seven came on pins from Brett Millard (106), Christopher Hayes (138), Thomas Greene (152), Joseph Rice (170), Shawn Raggins (195) and Travis Matthews (285).

Buchholz answered with seven bonus-point wins of its own. That list included pins from Venumadhava Mirel (132), Timothy Bowen (145), Kason Nichols (160), William Lancer (182) and Drew Lewis (220). At 120, Jedidiah Brown took an 11-0 major.

The teams will cross paths somewhat once again on the weekend. Columbia will head southwest to Lakeland for Lake Gibson’s Braves Duals on Saturday, while Buchholz will go northwesterly to Tallahassee and Florida High’s Cam Brown Seminole Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Episcopal 60, Terry Parker 18: At Parker, the Eagles swept the weight classes from 106 through 182 where they had representation in taking the dual, the season-opener for both teams.

Episcopal got pins from Nicholas Pressley (120), Scott Busey (126), Christian Ryan (132), Joe Jackson (138), Ben Helton (145), Aidan Chupp (152), John Fernandez (160) and Brennan Doherty (182).

The Braves answered with three forfeit victories at the upperweight bookend of the lineup.

Episcopal will return next week, hosting Bishop Kenny & Bishop Snyder in a Tuesday tri-meet. Terry Parker will host West Nassau in a single dual on Saturday morning.
