ACES OF THE DAY:
Matanzas: In a rematch of the girls’ state final at 162 last year, senior Morgan Morrison (162) got the better of this matchup Saturday, completing the weight-class win with a fall in 4:20 over Dr Phillips’ Armelle Oliantus in the final. Morrison had falled Dr Phillips’ Emanuele Zumba (5:19, quarters) and South Lake’s Maria Vazquez (2:52, semis) to get to Oliantus in the title match.
Ponte Vedra: Nationally-ranked sophomore Josie Sagasser defended that ranking with four pins en route to the 134 title. Sagasser falled Lake Mary’s Adele Ciotti (2:39, rd of 16), South Dade’s Brianna Membreno (3:20, quarters), Matanzas’ Isabella Tietje (2:46, semis) and then pinned Dr Phillips’ Julia Ferreira for the championship.
Mainland: Freshman Alexis Sutton (285) won twice by fall in the bracket, with pins over Osceola’s Katelyn Chin (1:49) in the semis and over Wiregrass Ranch’s Aryn Boyette for the title.
University (Orange City): The Lady Titans’ Ashley Corujo (112) was the team’s top finisher, with a third-place day. Corujo fell in the quarters to the eventual runnerup, but then didn’t lose again, with three wins by fall to take third, including a pin in 3:53 over Admiral Farragut’s Maeve Case in the medal match.
Deland: Junior Jocelyn Rivera (162) took fourth in the weight, with a 2-2 record and her two losses to the same wrestler. Rivera had two pins on the back to fight her way into the top four.
Deltona: Junior Dianna Pineda (112) won her first match of the season with a pin. Her two losses came to the fourth- and third-place finishers, respectively.
Union Cty: Freshman Savannah Cliett (154) had her first high school tournament, with a T-5th finish after losses by fall to the eventual champ and eventual third-place finisher.
