PALM COAST — The FHSAA dual team tournament series kicked off statewide Tuesday night at Flagler Palm Coast.
FPC hosted the first stage of preliminary 3A-District 2 duals competition, with DeLand and Forest coming over to compete in a tri-meet fashion.
At night’s end, the two sets of Bulldogs teams emerged to move on to the final round, set to stage at FPC on January 5. DeLand and Flagler Palm Coast guaranteed those spots with wins over the Wildcats (DeLand by a 60-24 count and FPC with a 60-15 win).
Flagler Palm Coast then defeated DeLand, 54-24, in the third dual. The two sets of Bulldogs will now wait for potential opponents from the other half of the district. That had been scheduled for Wednesday night at Buchholz, but had to be postponed per Bobcats coach Billy Pankey.
After building a 12-0 lead, DeLand then saw Forest take three pins in a row to go up 18-12, but the Bulldogs would win five in a row between 138 and 170, all by pin, taking a 42-12 margin. The Wildcats got one back with a fall at 182, but DeLand had a forfeit in hand at 195 to clinch, with pins at 220 and 285.
Phoenix Krauth (106), Zane Canada (138), Lane Wishart (145), Dylan Lambert (152), Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro (170), Preston Long (220) and Dalen Burns (285) each won by pin for DeLand (1-1), while Jakob Zawosky (120), Collin Maynard (126), Wesley Marren (132) and Casey Carr (182) had falls for the Wildcats (0-2).
The hosts then took the mats, and after spotting Forest a 3-0 deficit, FPC and the Wildcats would trade four max-point wins, with the Bulldogs taking pins at 126 and 138 and Forest winning by forfeit at 132 and 145. From 152 onward, though, it was all Flagler, as the hosts (2-0) took eight max-point wins in a row.
Alex Castanheira (106), John Hald (126), Brendan Buckles (138), Kyle Peacock (152), Bryce Dodge (170), Marcelo Gonzalez (182), Dalton Schell (220) and Seth Davis (285) all had pins for Flagler, while Zawosky’s 4-2 win at 120 was the Wildcats’ lone contested victory.
FPC and DeLand then squared off for next-event seeding purposes, and the hosts again trailed early, 6-0, 12-6 and 18-12, but then dominated with six straight pins from 152 to 220 to clinch the dual. DeLand would add two decisions at 285 and 106 and the hosts closed out with a fall at 113.
Kole Hannant (113), Hald (126), Buckles (138), Peacock (152), Timothy King (160), Dodge (170), Gonzalez (182), Garrick Schwartz (195) and Schell (220) each had falls. DeLand had three forfeits in its favor, as Dalen Burns (2-1 at 285) and Krauth (17-10 at 106) both won by decision.
