WEEKEND TOURNAMENTS

#Kiwanis: Union Cty Takes 9th

BROOKSVILLE — A year ago, Union Cty would have been deep in the field of a tournament the size and shape of the Kiwanis Invitational at Hernando.

That would be a year ago. This year, the Tigers put together a solid ninth-place team finish in the 25-team event, ahead of established teams like Land O’Lakes and Villages and just five back of eighth Weeki Wachee, and within shouting distance of the top six.

Union Cty had three placers and 92 points on the weekend, its first appearance in 2020-21. West Port also made its first regular-season appearance of the season, placing 23rd with 32 points. The Wolfpack had one placewinner.

Tampa Jesuit easily out-distanced the field for the team title, with a 121-point gap between itself and the runnerup hosts, Hernando.

Complete results from the tournament can be found HERE.

Union Cty is returning to competition with its first dual on Wednesday night, at Buchholz. We do not have a schedule for West Port, so can’t state with specificity where the Wolfpack will be next.

ACES OF THE DAY
Union Cty: Senior Cade Vaughn (132), a newcomer to the Tiger lineup this year, was its top finisher with a third-place effort. Vaughn reached the semis behind pins over wrestlers from Hernando, Weeki Wachee and the tournament’s #4 seed from Robinson in the quarters. After a loss by fall to the top seed and eventual runnerup, Vaughn had two pins over wrestlers from East Bay and over Gaither’s James Simpson, the #2 seed, in 3:09 for third.

West Port: Senior Frangelo Baltodano (120) was the Wolfpack’s only placer, taking fourth. After a 9-7 decision victory in the round of 16, Baltodano then lost by fall to the eventual champion from Jesuit in the quarters. In the consis, Baltodano pinned his way into the medal round, with falls over Riverview, Land O’Lakes and East Bay, but then took a 6-2 loss in the third-place match to Hernando’s TJ Rodier, the #2 seed.
