LIVE OAK — For the second straight year, Suwannee and Wakulla will face off for the 1A-District 2 dual team tournament title.
For the first time in the history of the dual team tournament series, now in Year 4, the finalists will have to wait nearly three weeks after advancing out of the semis.
Thursday night, the Bulldogs punched their ticket to the final — and a corresponding appearance in the Region 1 semis on January 14 — with a 42-39 victory over visiting Florida High.
Meanwhile, Wakulla (6-2) advanced with a forfeit victory over Baker Cty per War Eagles coaches, reaching the 1A-District 2 final for the fourth straight season.
The Bulldogs and Seminoles raged back-and-forth Thursday night, opening with the teams trading pins at 120 and 126 (Xander Kirkland for Suwannee at 120, recently-minted Lander signee Tyler Reeve at 126 for Florida High).
Suwannee (4-2) jumped out to an 18-6 lead on pins from Brody Boehm (132) and Tyson Musgrove (138). That lead would ebb and grow back, pushing to 30-18 Bulldogs on pins for them from Austin Howard (152) and Dustin Wood (170), with answers back on falls from FSUS’ Emil Ganim (145) and Alexander Hawkes (160).
The Seminoles (1-1) would take their only lead after the 220 match, behind pins from Micah Perdue (195) and Amarrie Harris at 220, plus a 9-6 decision in favor of John Campbell at 182, to go up 33-30 with two contested weights left and a forfeit in hand at 106 favoring Florida High.
But Suwannee’s bookends would make it happen for the Bulldogs, as Brian Robinson (285) and Austin McKinney (113) each won by fall to propel them to the dual victory.
Wakulla will host the 1A-District 2 final on January 7.
