DELTONA — A successful December for New Smyrna Beach wrapped up on a winning away note Thursday night.
The Barracudas won the first seven matches against 5 Star Conference and 2A-District 4 rivals Deltona, going on for a 63-12 dual victory in closing out the 2020 portion of the season.
New Smyrna Beach (5-1) jumped out to a 39-0 lead before a forfeit to the Wolves (1-5) got them on the board at 170. Jamey Bruner (126), Jace Engberg (132), Michael Shannon (145) and Avante Chamble (152) each had pins for the ‘Cudas in that early run, while Justis Chandler (138) added a 5-3 decision.
Doug Dittmer (195), Noah Cortez (285) and Simjay Engberg (106) would add pins later for New Smyrna Beach.
Deltona’s lone contested win came on a fall from Ethan Chiu at 220.
The Barracudas will host another 5 Star rival, DeLand, on January 8, as a solid tuneup prior to the 2A-District 4 dual team tournament the next day, which will be Deltona’s next competition.
Pace 71, W S Neal ALA 12: At Pace, the Patriots opened their dual season after two solid IBT finishes, giving up just one contested loss while taking nine such wins.
Pace got falls from Helena Alcantar (113), Jonah Fierro (132), Camden Friend (138), Atticus Waters (145), Joseph Cortez (160), Brody Andrews (170), Wyatt Dillon (195) and Andrew Adams (285). At 152, Seth O’Gara added a third-period tech fall (17-2 in 4:17) for the Patriots.
Pace will next compete in area rival South Walton’s Scott Simpson Invitational, on Saturday.
Oakleaf 56, Englewood 15: At Oakleaf, the hosts held down the bookends of the lineup, with a chunk of the middle as well in improving to 9-4 in duals and closing out 2020.
Kaleb Almario (113), Marcus McGee (126), Logan Gilbert (132), Christian Griffith (145), James McClintic (160), Ben Gaddis (220) and Jordan Mitchell (285) all won by fall for the Clay County Knights, who got a decision from Markos Barfield (13-8 at 120) as well.
Englewood (2-2) picked up a pin from Darryl Sam (182), with Lynden North (138) adding a 9-4 decision.
The Knights are off until January 6, when they’ll host the 3A-District 1 dual team tournament. Englewood is off until dual districts as well, next returning on the 4th with the 2A-District 3 meet at Stanton.
Paxon tri-meet: At Paxon, visiting First Coast’s more-sizable lineup was put to good use in the Buccaneers taking two wins over Gateway Conference rivals Raines (42-29) and Paxon (60-0).
The Vikings stopped the Golden Eagles, 42-18, in the final dual of the evening.
Double winners for First Coast (3-1 in duals) were Domorrien Wright (132, pin over Paxon), Payton London (138), Myles Nicco (145, pin over Paxon), Josiah Mossor (152, 2 pins), Isaiah Tucker (160, pin over Paxon), Alphonso Parsons (170) and Cleon Johnson (195, pin over Raines). Jaquan Dennis (220) added a fall in the Paxon dual.
Raines (2-1 in duals) got double-winning efforts from DaQuan King (120, tech over First Coast), Raynarde Thomas (182, fall over First Coast), Jamari Watson (220, 2 pins) and Gregory Townsend (285). Jirah Thomas (152/160) added a pin in the Paxon victory.
The Vikings will be the only team of the three still with a 2020 date on the calendar, as they host Ed White and Stanton on Saturday morning. First Coast will be at the Stanton-hosted 2A-District 3 duals on January 4, while the next date for Paxon (1-3) is slated to be the 6th, when Yulee hosts the 1A-District 3 dual tournament.
