#Gateway: Senators Defend Island, Title

Fletcher wrestlers and coaches celebrate a successful defense of their Gateway Conference title at home on Saturday (Photo submitted by Lee Ann Bradshaw via Facebook; action photos from 13 championship matches can be found on the Matmen Instagram page, nflamatmen).

NEPTUNE BEACH — The rule of thumb of late in the Gateway Conference two-day IBT seems to be this: Watch out for the team lurking in second place. Particularly the team clad in purple.

After trailing first-day leader Mandarin by a half-point after first-day wrestling on Friday, defending Gateway champion Fletcher poured on the momentum in taking its second straight conference title on Saturday.

The Senators won five weight-class titles and had all but one wrestler, that competed over the weekend, finish in the top four in their respective weight classes, pushing past Mandarin, 222.5-160.5, for a successful defense of “the island” and their 2020 conference title.

“Everyone wrestled pretty well; up to their potentials, a lot of them did. It’s only our second tournament, but people are learning how to get through things and now, hopefully, we can set up for defense of our district title,” Fletcher coach Paul Schloth said, noting that the wrestling win kept the Senators’ hopes in good stead for a conference all-sports top spot.

Mandarin — which had just one dual in December — might have been a surprise to some (note: not to us) in holding second, with a 44.5-point cushion over a team that was a surprise to us in third, as First Coast emerged third with 116 points.

The Mustangs had one champion and saw nine top-four finishes on the weekend, while the Buccaneers placed seven in the top four.

Robert E Lee held off Wolfson and Raines for fourth, with 103.5 points, with the Wolfpack taking fifth (89) and Vikings sixth (83). Lee had two champions and five placers, while Wolfson also had five placers. Raines had four placers, but three of those four won weight-class championships.

Englewood (77 points, 2 champs) was seventh, followed by Westside (66.5, 1 champ), Atlantic Coast (43), Terry Parker (39), Paxon (24.5), Ed White (17) and Ribault (16). Baldwin and Stanton had participants, but no team points. Sandalwood could not compete this year.

Complete team scores and brackets can be found HERE.

120 — Burkes won his first title (was the runnerup at 113 last year), teching or pinning through the bracket. Prior to the final, Burkes teched the third-place wrestler from Fletcher (17-1 in 4:11) and had a 52-second fall over Terry Parker in the semis.
126 — Ashmore won his first title (was 0-2 a year ago) with three max-point wins. In addition to his pin in the finals, Ashmore won by injury-default over a teammate in the semis and won by pin over Mandarin in the quarters.
132 — Smith won his first title in first Gateway appearance, with four pins on the weekend. Prior to the finals, Smith won by fall over wrestlers from Englewood, Robert E Lee and then Fletcher in the semifinals.
138 — North reached the final for the third time, winning his second title (won at 132 last year, 2nd at 138 in 2019) and had three pins prior to his decision in the title match. 152 — Rodriguez became a three-time placer (3rd at 170 in 2019) and two-time champ in knocking off a fellow 2020 conference champ in the final. Before the final, Rodriguez had a bye into the quarters, then had a tech fall (18-3 in 2:51) over the third-place Atlantic Coast finisher and a fall over the fourth-place Mandarin wrestler.
160 — Denmark pinned his way through the tournament in winning a Gateway title for the third time. Prior to the championship round, Denmark had pins over wrestlers from Baldwin and Atlantic Coast to get to the final.
170 — In competing at 170 in conference for the fourth time, Thomas reached the final for the third time and won for the second time, pinning his way through the draw. Thomas had first-period pins over wrestlers from Ribault and Wolfson prior to the finals round.
182 — Sam won his first Gateway title and second place finish (was 3rd last year), also pinning his way through the bracket. Sam had pins over wrestlers from Stanton and Westside prior to the championship match.
195 — Watson won his second conference bracket after finishing a match short of a top-four finish in 2019, with three pins in three rounds. Before the finals, Watson had a bye into the quarters and then falls over wrestlers from Paxon and Fletcher.
220 — Hollenbach became a Gateway 3xer in three trips on Saturday for the Senators. Before his decision victory in the final, Hollenbach had a bye into the semis, then won by fall in 26 seconds over Mandarin in that round.

#Wolfpack: ‘Cudas Claim 2nd

ORLANDO — As the regular season winds down, late-season events feel the crunch as host teams limit Covid exposure and everyone feels the need to try to both find mat time and also keep kids healthy for the stretch run in 3-4 weeks.

One such event affected by the pandemic — one of dozens, to be sure — was Saturday’s Wolfpack Invitational at Timber Creek, which lost nearly two-thirds of its size from last year to this (17 teams to six).

Two of those six were New Smyrna Beach and Atlantic, which placed second and fifth, respectively, in Saturday’s roundrobin event. The Barracudas, in their first tournament since their 2A state semis appearance the previous weekend, had 187.5 points, only outpointed by the hosts at 202.

New Smyrna Beach had five champions on the day, with three additional runners-up.

Atlantic had one champion and one runnerup in scoring 65 points and placing fifth.

Not all individual performances could be highlighted due to missing results. Roundrobin results for all teams can be found HERE.

THE ACE OF THE DAY
New Smyrna Beach: After missing state duals the previous weekend, Avante Chamble (152) made up for lost time with five pins in 6:46 of mat time, with wins over wrestlers from Olympia, Evans, Timber Creek, East River and a Barracudas teammate.

#ThankYou: To The Sponsors

Before I head out for today, in what will be a very long weekend round these parts, I wanted to again express some appreciation — these words are really not enough, though I’m not really free to wash cars or mow lawns until after the season’s over.

We’ve got things we’re going through at Basecamp #Due, and I’ll share a bit more about that in the off-season, I should think. And we all, you all (fine Y’ALL) included, are going through some things.

Which makes your generous donations much appreciated.

We’ve quite frankly outgrown our ability to do this job, and until we achieve another business model (heads up: if you know things about business planning, Web businesses and the like, I want to pick your brain this off-season), donations are right now the only way to show appreciation for the size of this work.

And between the things we’re going through, and the growth we’ve had, we’re constantly asking ourselves if it’s worth it. We don’t always know. Results don’t come in. Emails asking for them don’t get answered. Some folks are rude. That’s life, but you know, this is a volunteer thing; I could be at the beach today (yeah, I know, it’s too cold).

Then there are situations like this week, with the spectre of potentially very real threat to the future of the website in play, when two very generous donations came in. The donors are sprinkled in along with those whom I can reliably track going back to my last #ThankYou post, which was criminally long ago, and again, apologies for that:

  • Laura Paridon
  • William Pyburn
  • Brian VanVactor
  • Kenneth DeFord (our most frequent benefactor)
  • Johan Olarte
  • Alex Vugman
  • An anonymous coach
  • John Mulvany (a Georgia parent)
  • John Rogerson

If you gave to me via GoFundMe in the last six months, I thank you, though I can’t list you because the link has expired and I can no longer access it.

The donations don’t pay my bills, I have that almost completely covered in paid work, but they do provide options. A little quality of life. And I realize anew the impact the work is having out there.

And donations of any size or type are always welcome. Our most generous donor over the past few seasons has provided in-kind services to my family for some while now.

If – and I should stress IF because I always said I wouldn’t in the past, but circumstances are changing beyond my measly control — we go to a subscription model, it’s going to be a very friendly one for all income levels.

And thank you simply for reading to the end of this post, and all the ends of all the posts I’ve written.

Gotta go to work now. The kids need their ‘Gram photos. Fletcher first, and then Flagler, and then a mountain of results from two states tonight. The work on-site is the easy and fun part. The drives home and the long hours alone, that’s where the real donuts get made.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

#DailyRdp: 01/28 Duals

DAYTONA BEACH — In its final home dual meet of the 2020-21 season, Mainland exited on a high note, romping past a road-weary Atlantic squad, 66-9, in the coverage area’s lone dual meet of the evening Thursday night.

The Buccaneers (5-9) rolled out to a 48-0 lead before Atlantic would get on the scoreboard, with seven pins on the night from Kaden Golder (120), Brian Harris (126), Heath Hilado (132), Isaias Davila (138), Devin Dorton (170), Brady Howe (195) and Tyler Eddy (220).

Mainland also took forfeit wins at 145, 152, 160 and 106. Atlantic (record unknown due to missing results), which had dual meets at three different opponents on back-to-back-to-back nights, had a win by fall at 182 and a decision at 285.

The Sharks go back on the road Saturday, to Orlando for Timber Creek’s one-day Wolfpack Invitational. Mainland is off until February 4, when the Buccaneers complete their duals season with a trip to Orlando themselves, for Evans’ tri-meet that night.

ST JOHNS — As the season moves into its homestretch, with less than three weeks of regular competition left, bragging rights are still needing to be established.

After a couple of hiccups early in January, Creekside has gotten back close to its season-beginning form. Coming off Saturday’s tournament win at Wolfson, the Knights turned back Bartram Trail, 40-34, to continue their top spot in St Johns County Wednesday night.

The Knights (19-3) got out to a 15-0 start behind pins from Conner Wright (113) and Hunter England (120), along with an 8-1 win at 126 from David Ferreira.

Bartram Trail (16-5) would cut the lead to five, 15-10, behind two bonus-point wins at 132 and 138 (pin from Trevor Tagarelli at 32, 15-5 major from Preston Pena at 138). Creekside re-extended the lead to 12 on a 16-8 major from Diego Rivera (152) and 8-4 win from Ryan Redfern (145).

The teams then traded pins from 160 through 195, with John McNames (160) and Sharif Denson (182) winning by fall for the Bears and Hunter Brown (170) and Robbie Balke (195, in a dual-clinching pin) for the Knights.

The teams then traded forfeits at 220 and 285, with Bartram’s Ethan Vugman (106) closing out the dual with a fall.

Deltona 37, Atlantic 36: At Deltona, the Wolves (4-12) won on their Senior Night, taking the win on Criterion D per Track (most wins to include forfeits).

Deltona took contested victories via fall from Kevin Kerns (120), Ethan Chiu (220) and Chris Nash (285), with forfeit wins at 106, 113 and 152.

Atlantic (season record unknown due to missing results) had pins at 126, 132, 138 and 170, with forfeit wins at 182 and 195. Check the box score for more.

The Sharks, who wrestled on Tuesday night as well (no results from that dual against Lake Howell), compete again Thursday night at Mainland. Deltona returns to competition on Friday at the Flagler Rotary.

Matanzas 46, University (Orange City) 24: At Orange City, the Pirates (9-2) had back-to-back-to-back bonus-point wins from 152-170 and two pins up top.

Braden Hawley (113), Jordan Mills (160), Quincy Cuthbert (170), AJ Pieroni (220) and Robert Elder (285) all won by fall for Matanzas, which also got a 9-1 major from Tyson Mills (152) and forfeit wins at 126 and 132.

The host Titans (4-4) had a pin from Malique Hargett (120) and decisions from Grady Bryant (7-3 at 106) and Luke Harrod (10-9 at 145), plus forfeit wins at 182 and 195.

In girls’ action contested before the boys, the Lady Titans won two of three contested matches, with Katie Roche (106) winning by fall and Alexandra Roche (132) taking a 7-4 win. Riley White (113) had a 4-0 decision for the Lady Pirates.

Matanzas is at Flagler for Rotary on Friday, while University (Orange City) is off until February 4, when the Titans host 5 Star Conference rival Atlantic.

Fernandina Beach 50, Bishop Kenny 25: At Bishop Kenny, the Pirates (17-4) clinched the dual behind back-to-back-to-back max-point wins from 120 through 132, building a 39-12 lead with four matches to go.

Nik Saldana (106), Caden Kubatzke (120), Dietrich Woods (132, with the dual-clincher) and Lucas Crawford (160) each had pins for Fernandina Beach, with Enzo Gamba (152) taking a third-period tech fall and Tyler Harris (182) winning with a 10-4 decision. The Pirates had forfeit victories at 195, 220 and 126 as well.

Bishop Kenny (15-13) collected pins from Kevin Thallemer (285), Aden Seepersad (138) and Christopher Hampton (145), with Ryan Mayer pitching a 10-0 shutout for a major at 113 and Michael Bagan taking a 10-6 win at 170.

Both teams are off until February, with Fernandina going to Englewood’s tri-meet on the 5th and Bishop Kenny scheduled for the Clay Rotary on the 5th and 6th.

Clay 74, Middleburg 6: At Clay, the hosts (10-2) gave up only a forfeit victory, winning all eight contested matches in an early birthday present for coach Jim Reape.

Dalton Huckelberry (120), Thomas Viens (132), Luke Boree (138), Dominic Martin (152), Ethan Larsen (170) and Hunter Huckelberry (182) each won by pin, with Josh Kumpf (11-2 at 145) and Cale Hoskinson (11-1 at 160) taking majors. The Blue Devils had forfeit wins at 220, 285, 113, 126 and 195.

Middleburg (5-7) had its lone victory at 106.

Clay will be at Flagler Rotary on Friday, while Middleburg travels to Wakulla for its MyHOUSE Big Bend Invitational duals tournament on Saturday.

Fleming Island 50, Yulee 27: At Yulee, the visiting Golden Eagles (15-1) roared out to a 30-0 lead and made it stand up.

Fleming Island took pins in the first four weights, as Raul Gonzalez (220), Ethan Hoffstetter (285), Joseph Forte (106) and Hunter Herrington (113) got the Golden Eagles out to a strong start.

The teams traded points between 120 and 152, with one forfeit and one pin each (Tristan Martinez for the Hornets at 126, Xavier Logan for the Golden Eagles at 132), then took one decision each, with Isaiah Shook (145) with a 5-4 win for Yulee (8-5) and David Parkes (152) with a 10-7 decision for Fleming.

The closest that Yulee would get would be 18, 39-21, and that came after Collin Sewell’s fall at 160 for the Hornets, but Fleming Island clinched the victory with Jhoel Robinson’s second-period, 21-4 tech fall at 170. After a forfeit win to Yulee at 182, the Golden Eagles had one more pin from Hunter Williams (195) to close out the dual.

Yulee also won by forfeit at 138, while Fleming had a forfeit victory at 120. The Golden Eagles now will go to Flagler Palm Coast for the Flagler Rotary on Friday and Saturday, while Yulee will travel to Crawfordville for Wakulla’s MyHOUSE Big Bend Invitational on Saturday.

#TigerDuals: Hosts Take 2nd

Columbia wrestlers, coaches and managers celebrate a runnerup team effort Saturday at home in its own Tiger Duals one-day tournament (Photo submitted by Peter Whittington via Facebook).

LAKE CITY — In the 10-team Tiger Duals on Saturday, it was the one team well outside the Matmen coverage area that set the pace.

Bloomingdale, located due east of Brandon in Hillsborough County, made the I-75 drive worthwhile, with four double-digit dual wins, including a 51-21 victory over the host Tigers in the championship match.

Columbia (15-6) in duals for the season won Pool A, with victories over Union Cty (47-33), a combined team made up of wrestlers from University Christian & Gainesville (35-21), Forest (51-30) and Westside (48-30).

Like the Tigers, Buchholz (11-3) had its only loss to Bloomingdale, a 51-29 Pool B loss in round 2 of pool play. The Bobcats took wins over Suwannnee (46-25), St Augustine (43-33) and Ridgeview (58-19) in pool, then added a fourth dual win with a 60-23 victory over Forest in the third-place match.

Union Cty (6-10, third in Pool A) was fifth, St Augustine (8-10, third in B) sixth, Suwannee (21-8, fourth in B) seventh, with the combined UC/Gainesville team taking eighth. Ridgeview (15-14) and Westside (4-6) were 0-4 in pool competitions and did not cross over.

Not all area teams could have team or individual accomplishments noted in this story, due to prior missing results. Full duals for all 10 teams in the tournament can be found HERE.

WEEKEND TOURNAMENTS

#Mulligan: Past, Present Celebrated At Bay HS

A composite photo of the top 3 teams at this weekend’s 2nd Annual George Mulligan Invitational, with Ft Walton Beach in the upper right, Gulf Breeze upper left and Mosley wrestlers (and Bay County champions) in the foreground (Photo submitted by Zach Deaton).

PANAMA CITY — With all the stories — and they’re accurate — about Florida being an emerging power in the sport, it’s easy to forget, sometimes, how much history the sport actually has here.

With the 2nd annual George Mulligan Invitational at Bay, a celebration of both past and present is just as much a fundamental part of the weekend as the grappling that takes place on the mat.

A tournament designed to honor the name of the man who started the first program in Bay County back in 1960 at Bay HS — he also helped start the Mosley and Rutherford programs to boot — got a solid upgrade in talent, both individually and collectively. Just one returner from last year’s slate of 14 champions was able to repeat as champion in 2021.

And, this year saw the tournament title stay in state, as Ft Walton Beach outpointed an 18-team field to win the team title with 303 points.

Gulf Breeze was second with 258.5 points, a point ahead of last year’s runnerup, Mosley, which repeated as Bay County champion by dint of having the highest tournament finish among the six county teams. Niceville (218.5 points) and South Walton (191) rounded out the top five.

Not all teams could receive individual recognition in this recap due to missing results from earlier in the season. That said, full brackets for each weight class can be found HERE.

JACKSONVILLE — It wasn’t all that long ago that Creekside, Matanzas and Bartram Trail clashed in head-to-head fashion for the 2A-District 4 title.

Matanzas had 11 placers (as did Creekside Black), with four champions. Bartram Trail matched the Pirates’ champion total and had seven placers in the top four, six of those as finalists.

Host Wolfson was the city’s top team in the 13-team field, with 129 points and eight top-four finishes, with one champ and one runnerup. Robert E Lee rounded out the top five, with 74 points, four placers (three finalists) and one champion.
