TALLAHASSEE — The best way to respond to a loss is to get right back to the business of winning.
Two days after falling in the region dual semifinals, Lincoln started writing its next chapter on Saturday at its own Trojan Invitational.
And, for the first time in the history of that event, it wasn’t staged at Lincoln High; instead, due to uncertain times, the event was held at the Tallahassee Jr. Volleyball Club. That didn’t stop the Trojans from running the table with a 5-0 day and taking the championship trophy.
Lincoln took dual victories over University Christian (72-12), Ponte Vedra (64-15), Leon (78-6), Belleview (66-18) and then, in a winner-take-the-title dual, turned back crosstown and district rival Chiles, 39-32, in the day’s final round.
The Trojans (11-1 for the season) had at least three wins at every weight class but one. Nine of the 13 wrestlers manning those weights would go on to win at least four matches, and five were 5-0. Two of the five were max-pointers, meaning that they scored six team dual points in every dual that the team wrestled.
Chiles took second with a 4-1 tournament. The Timberwolves (9-3 in duals for the season) had wins over Lincoln’s B group (58-18), Episcopal (48-27), Godby (72-12) and Nease (54-30) before meeting their rivals in the final.
Eleven Timberwolf wrestlers won at least three matches, with seven taking four and five going 5-0 (three as max-pointers).
Episcopal, also, was 4-1 on the day. The Eagles (18-4 in duals) took third behind wins over Godby (72-12), Nease (46-35) and Lincoln B (63-9), with a 40-39 criteria victory over Belleview in the third-place dual. Eleven Eagles won at least three matches, with two going 5-0.
The Diamondbacks (6-3 for the year) finished at 3-2, with dual victories over University Christian (60-11), Ponte Vedra (60-11) and Leon (70-10). Belleview had nine wrestlers win three matches, with two going 5-0.
Nease (9-11) and Ponte Vedra (6-11) were both 2-2 on the day. The Sharks had dual wins over Leon (39-24) and University Christian (42-12), with three wrestlers winning at least three matches (two 4-0 unbeatens), while the St Johns Panthers had wins over Lincoln B (60-6) and Godby (48-12). Nease had six wrestlers win three matches, with three going 4-0.
Leon and Lincoln B both were 1-4 and tied for seventh. The Lions (3-7) had a 24-12 win over University Christian and had two wrestlers win three matches or more, with one at 5-0. Lincoln B took a 42-12 win over Godby, and the Trojan Bs had one wrestler win three matches on the day.
University Christian (1-12) and Godby (0-5) each had two wrestlers compete, so team wins were not in play. However, the Christians won all 10 of their matches (nine of them contested), while the Cougar duo were 9-1 with eight pins.
Chiles and Episcopal both wrestle on Wednesday night in single duals (Chiles at Florida High, Episcopal hosts Fletcher). Nease will host Creekside on Thursday night, while Belleview and University Christian compete in Columbia’s Tiger Duals. Leon will be at Chiles on January 26, while Ponte Vedra is at Fletcher on the 27th. Lincoln is off until a single dual at Florida High on February 2, while Godby is off until Chiles’ Timberwolf Duals on February 6.
