CALLAHAN — The dual to decide the 2020-21 Nassau County champion Thursday night at West Nassau had something for both competing teams.
Fernandina Beach walked away with the title, its first since the Matmen website began (to best of our faint recollection), after a 54-30 win over the Warriors.
But West Nassau (7-16) got something too, in that the Warriors won five of the night’s six contested matches. And, the fans got a treat as well, as littles from both towns’ youth programs got a chance to suit up and scrap as well after the varsity had their say.
The Pirates (18-4) brought a full lineup to the party, taking eight victories by forfeit. Lucas Crawford (160) had Fernandina Beach’s lone contested win, by fall.
Winning by pin for West Nassau were Jackson Holcomb (106), Blayden Tharpe (113), Gibreen Ahmad (138), Nolan McKelvy (145) and Jackson Rowell (220).
Fernandina Beach goes back on the mats tonight at Englewood as part of the Rams’ quad meet, while West Nassau is off until the 1A-District 3 IBT event at Yulee on the 20th.
Mainland splits: At Evans HS in Orlando, the visiting Buccaneers routed the hosts, 42-10, but fell to Apopka, 56-9, in a tri-meet that wrapped up Mainland’s dual season.
Double winners for the Buccaneers were Isaias Davila (138, decision over Apopka) and Devin Dorton (170, decision over Evans, pin over Apopka).
Kaden Golder (126) and Tyler Eddy (220) added falls for Mainland (6-10) in the win over Evans, while Skyler Schroeder (160) took an 11-6 win in that same dual.
Mainland will host the Bi-County tournament — which replaces the 5 Star Conference event typically held in this space, plus picks up a couple of surrounding southern area teams — on Saturday.
Still waiting on: We are waiting on scoresheets from the South Lake/Belleview, Atlantic/University (Orange City) and Union Cty/Villages duals that we still show as being on the schedule Thursday night. We will update the roundup as needed based on timely submissions.
