#BraggingRights: 1A-Region 4

Cutting to the chase…

Today is our final region to analyze: 1A-Region 4. Which part of south Florida ruled the southern Atlantic? I went in with some preconceptions, some of which were confirmed, but there was some very interesting things happening there.

We’ll start with a count of the most points scored by district.

Thanks to to the 1-3 finish from Somerset Academy and Mater Lakes Academy, District 15 built an early lead that District 13’s Jensen Beach and American Heritage (Delray Beach), with their 2-4 finishes, cut into. The 13s had better depth, but ultimately the larger 15 group had just enough — about half a point per weight class — to take the win here.

  • District 15: 473 points
  • District 13: 465.5
  • District 14: 248
  • District 16: 173

How about state qualifiers?

Here, it was District 13 that carried the day, complicating our analysis. Sure, District 15’s six titles were the most in the region, but the 13s had more finalists (12-10) and had an equal amount of depth to the 15s (6 3rd, 4 4th for both).

  • District 13: 22 qualifiers (5 1st, 7 2nd, 6 3rd, 4 4th).
  • District 15: 20 qualifiers (6 1st 4 2nd, 6 3rd, 4 4th).
  • District 14: 9 qualifiers (3 1st, 3 2nd, 1 3rd, 2 4th).
  • District 16: 5 qualifiers (0 1st, 0 2nd, 1 3rd, 4 4th).

I also like to look at the depth each region has. One measuring indicator I use is to calculate the depth of each district by compiling the win-loss records of each district’s competitors. This was INCREDIBLY close. With one weight class to go, District 15 and 13 were separated by just one win. But, the 15s, thanks to a 1-2 finish from their ace heavies, were able to seal the deal.

  • District 15: 92-61 (60.13% win percentage)
  • District 13: 86-61 (58.50% win percentage)
  • District 14: 53-64
  • District 16: 46-91

While there’s certainly an argument for District 13 — which I would not have necessarily, for lack of a better term, expected, and kudos to them — District 15 holds a slight lead in 1A-Region 4.

106: True 4th — Matches Coral Shores’ Vincent Biondoletti (qualified 4th) against SLAM’s Jason Ramirez. That would be a rematch of the District 16 final, which Biondoletti won by second-period fall.
113: True 2nd — Runnerup Ryan Mooney (Jensen Beach) would face 3rd-place Matthew Velasco (Somerset Academy). No true 4th.
120: True 2nd — Runnerup Mathew Palermo (Cardinal Gibbons) would face 3rd-place Jewell Williams (Jensen Beach). No true 4th.
126: True 2nd — Runnerup Andrew DeSola (American Heritage, Delray Beach) would face 3rd-place Mater Lakes Academy’s Luis Arboleda. True 4th — Matches Somerset Academy’s Raymond Greene (qualified 4th) against American Heritage (Plantation)’s Armando Wisdom.
132: True 4th — Matches Jensen Beach’s Tyler Savastano (qualified 4th) against American Heritage (Plantation)’s Alexander Wisdom.
138: No true 2nd or 4th.
145: True 2nd — Runnerup Bas Diaz (Somerset Academy) would face 3rd-place Rafael Romero (American Heritage, Delray Beach). No true 4th.
152: True 2nd — Runnerup Omer Barak (American Heritage, Delray Beach) would face 3rd-place Tehran Piza (Jensen Beach). This would be a rematch of the District 13 final; Piza won that match by a 9-8 count. No true 4th.
160: True 2nd — Runnerup Bransen Byrd (Jensen Beach) would face 3rd-place Izac Martinez (Clewiston). That also was a rematch of the District 13 final; in that round, Byrd took a 5-3 decision. True 4th — Matches Cardinal Gibbons’ Daniel Korchensky (qualified 4th) against Mater Lakes Academy’s Jesse Diaz.
170: True 2nd — Runnerup Danny Diaz (Somerset Academy) would face 3rd-place Mater Lakes Academy’s Achilles Rocha. That’s a rematch of the District 15 final, in which Rocha won, 13-9. True 4th — Matches Jensen Beach’s Matt O’Hara (qualified 4th) against Cardinal Gibbons’ Richard Tauriello.
182: True 4th — Matches Mater Lakes Academy’s Matthew Cruanes (qualified 4th) against Cardinal Gibbons’ Austin Cooper.
195: No true 2nd or 4th.
220: True 2nd — Runnerup Andrew Burnette (Jensen Beach) would face 3rd-place Max Ryan (Key West). True 4th — Matches Mater Lakes Academy’s Branden Marrero (qualified 4th) against American Heritage (Plantation)’s Josh Hartman.
285: True 2nd — Runnerup Matthew Jimenez (Somerset Academy) would face 3rd-place Jertavis Black (Cardinal Gibbons). While we don’t have complete results on the two teams, they did meet in the first day of state duals, with Jimenez taking a 7-1 decision. True 4th — Matches Key West’s River Cutino-Lyda (qualified 4th) against SLAM’s Keven Kinsman, which would be a rematch of the District 16 final, in which Cutino-Lyda won by first-period fall.

So that’s it for the region series. If anybody wants a more detailed breakdown of the stats, either from regions or states, I’ll hang on to my notes for a bit. Just email me at the email address on the home page.

#Fargo: Day 6 – Week Concludes For N Fla

FARGO — Michael Shannon did not want a repeat of his freestyle experience when he began US Marine Corps Junior Greco-Roman competition on Thursday.

His goal — like everyone’s, to win a Fargo stop sign reserved for the top eight in each weight class contested throughout the week at the Fargodome — wasn’t realized, but it represented significant progress, particularly compared to the 0-2 freestyle experience the rising New Smyrna Beach senior had had on Sunday last.

It took two Pennsylvania wrestlers — Sam McMonagle on the front side and Noah Rice in the consis — to end Shannon’s tournament, but in between, he rolled up three wins and got pretty deep into the consi bracket.

Shannon jumped out to a 6-2 lead over McMonagle with a minute left in the first period, but McMonagle then racked up seven takedowns in succession for a 16-6 superior victory in the round of 128. And Nevada’s Tyson Cuamba ramped up a 5-0 lead through one period in the first consi-side match, and it looked like a second 0-2 day.

But Shannon wasn’t ready yet, with two 4-point turns and a takedown for an 11-5 points win over Cuamba, building on that in the subsequent round against Montana’s Brady Ellison, with a 4-point turn and two takedowns en route to a 10-0 superior victory (4:11).

However, the third consi-side round against Texas’ Joshua Moreno took quite a bit, as Moreno built a 10-4 lead through the first period. Shannon needed every point to advance, with a takedown, 4-point turn, and then a takedown with four seconds to push past Moreno for a 12-10 points win. That sent him into a fourth consi round against Rice, and Rice pushed the pace early with a 4-point turn and subsequent takedown for a 6-0 first period lead. Shannon would get some momentum back with a takedown with 57 seconds left, but Rice answered with one of his own down the stretch, taking a 9-2 points win.

While Shannon had a solid run on Thursday, two other area wrestlers had a too-short stay.

Rising Bolles senior Jacob Witt and rising Lake Mary senior Dominic Rubino both had trouble getting offense started in their respective pairs of matches.

Witt fell on the front side of the bracket to Illinois’ Jalen Dunson (12-1 in 2 minutes) and in the consis to Georgia’s Carson Chalk (12-2, again in 2 minutes). For his part, Rubino also had losses on the front to Alaska’s Colton Parduhn (10-0 in 1:01) and Michigan’s Austin Matheney (10-0 in 1:47).

Results for all three wrestlers can be found below.

#BraggingRights: 2A-Region 3

Cutting to the chase…

We’ve got just two more regions to go in our analysis of which district won each of the 12 region tournaments in Florida. Next up is Region 3 in 2A. Who’s the strongest? Punta Gorda? Ft Myers? Naples? We wanted to find out. The data told us that it was the Naples area, and District 12, that was the strongest, though District 10 did have one argument from a certain point of view.

We’ll start with a count of the most points scored by district.

The 1-2 punch of champion Palmetto Ridge and third-place Barron Collier was a compelling start for the 12s, but it was Golden Gate’s points that really put this race out of reach. Still, though, the margin was barely more than 1 point per region slot.

  • District 12: 515 points
  • District 10: 453.5
  • District 11: 386.5
  • District 9: 213

How about state qualifiers?

Here, the 12s pressed their advantage with a lot more gap compared to the rest of the region, as no district had more champs (six) or finalists (12). District 10 did have an equal amount of depth, with 10 3rds/4ths to match the 12s, but the gap in runners-up provided most of the space.

  • District 12: 22 qualifiers (6 1st, 6 2nd, 5 3rd, 5 4th).
  • District 10: 15 qualifiers (4 1st, 1 2nd, 6 3rd, 4 4th).
  • District 11: 13 qualifiers (3 1st, 5 2nd, 1 3rd, 4 4th).
  • District 9: 6 qualifiers (1 1st, 2 2nd, 2 3rd, 1 4th).

I also like to look at the depth each region has. One measuring indicator I use is to calculate the depth of each district by compiling the win-loss records of each district’s competitors. Here’s where District 10 can claim an argument, as the 10s had the most wins, and that with just one weight where it had an additional qualifier per FHSAA schematics. But the 12s had a better win percentage, and that’s what we primarily look at here.

  • District 12: 114-91 (55.61% win percentage)
  • District 10: 118-99 (54.38% win percentage)
  • District 11: 100-96
  • District 9: 60-106

District 12 carried the day in 2A-Region 3, but it got plenty of fight along the way.

Now, for the What Ifs. In MOST cases, there will be a true 4th; there would not be a true 2nd if the runnerup and 3rd-place wrestler met in the semis or quarters, that match would be determinative.

106: True 4th — Matches Cape Coral’s Richard Albert (qualified 4th) against Palmetto’s Zach Stolze.
113: True 4th — Matches Palmetto Ridge’s Bernardo Barnhart (qualified 4th) against Countryside’s Kaden Cartagena.
120: No true 2nd or 4th.
126: True 2nd — Runnerup Demetri Zertopoulis (Palmetto Ridge) would face 3rd-place Ethan Byrd (Barron Collier). That would be a rematch of the District 12 final, which Zertopoulis won by first-period fall. True 4th — Matches Ft Myers’ Nolan Nguyen (qualified 4th) against Dunbar’s Joshua Martinez. That’s a district finals rematch too, as Nguyen shut out Martinez, 8-0, to win District 11.
132: True 2nd — Runnerup John Vadyak (Ft Myers) would face 3rd-place Isaac Church (Charlotte). True 4th — Matches Barron Collier’s Grant Gappelberg (qualified 4th) against Naples’ Cole Henry. That was a rematch of the District 12 semis, in which Gappelberg took a 3-2 decision.
138: True 2nd — Runnerup Jaden Harrah (Island Coast) would face 3rd-place Leonard Feliciano (Palmetto Ridge). No true 4th.
145: True 4th — Matches Mariner’s Lance Crawford (qualified 4th) against Pinellas Park’s Cobin Crawford.
152: True 2nd — Runnerup Justin Cole (Cape Coral) would face 3rd-place Koen Hoffman (Port Charlotte). No true 4th.
160: True 2nd — Runnerup Jacob Holland (Braden River) would face 3rd-place Mack Koselke (Mariner). No true 4th.
170: True 2nd — Runnerup Cory Cannan (Barron Collier) would face 3rd-place Brian Burburija (Countryside). True 4th — Matches Palmetto Ridge’s Jacob Damas (qualified 4th) against Port Charlotte’s Grant Laballister.
182: True 2nd — Runnerup Gregorio Herrera (Palmetto Ridge) would face 3rd-place Cael Newton (Charlotte). While we don’t have comprehensive results on either of these powerhouse teams, they did meet at the first day of state duals, where Newton took a 7-4 victory. True 4th — Matches Countryside’s Nick Granata (qualified 4th) against Palmetto’s Ethan Bell.
195: True 2nd — Runnerup Antonio Petraglia (Palmetto Ridge) would face 3rd-place Okten Logue (Port Charlotte). True 4th — Matches Boca Ciega’s Jaden Fox-Harrington (qualified 4th) against Pinellas Park’s Benjamin Cash.
220: True 4th — Matches Charlotte’s Biaggio Frattarelli (qualified 4th) against Palmetto’s Yeidisson Santana. The district rivals did not meet in the District 10 tournament the previous week.
285: True 4th — Matches Cypress Lake’s Adam Larochelle (qualified 4th) against Osceola (Seminole)’s Miguel Tosado.

Next up — hopefully tomorrow — we will complete the #BraggingRights project with the final region, Region 4 in 1A.

#Fargo: Day 5 — Smith Takes 8th in Jr Women

FARGO, ND — The matches were better and the final outcome still resulted in a podium finish for Orange Park rising senior Andrea Smith.

And that’s what will matter most, as Smith will take an eighth-place Fargo stop sign and all-American effort Wednesday after completing the US Marine Corps Junior women’s freestyle tournament at the Fargodome.

Smith didn’t get on the mats until well into the afternoon session, with a consi quarterfinal against Montana’s Omastewin Foster in the 225-lb weight class. Smith tied the match at 1-1 with 1:55 left to go, but Foster was able to secure two takedowns down the stretch, sending Smith into the seventh-place match.

There, against Colorado’s Stefania Jaramillo, Smith got into a 4-0 deficit on a pair of first-period takedowns, but was able to push the pace in the second period, with one point given after a second passivity warning to Jaramillo, followed by a Smith takedown with 1:38 left to make it 4-3. Smith tied the match with 11 seconds left, but Jaramillo found a takedown at the end.

While Smith completed her second day, Wednesday marked the first day of 16U Greco-Roman competition and an opportunity for rising Bartram Trail junior Ethan Vugman (113) to right the ship after a too-quick freestyle tournament last weekend.

But eventual quarterfinalist Reid Spurley, of Wisconsin, sent Vugman into the consis fairly quickly once again behind five takedowns and a turn for a 15-5 superior victory (3:58).

He would bounce back, though, with three straight one-sided victories. Vugman needed just 46 seconds to deck Wellington’s Evan Pena in his first consi-side match, then falled Nevada’s Nat’aani Prado in 1:04. Vugman picked up his third consi victory behind three takedowns and a turn for a first-period (1:49) 10-0 superior victory over Oklahoma’s Payton Zweifel, but couldn’t sustain the energy into the evening session, as an early 3-0 lead evaporated against Kansas’ Dillon Cooper, who had three takedowns and a turn in the second period, winning on points, 11-7.

At 285, rising Forest junior Cane Fernandez was just two matches short of an all-American finish, going 1-2 on the day. Fernandez lost by fall on the front side (round of 32) to Wisconsin’s Evan Gratz (3:16) and on the back to Wisconsin’s Griffin Empey (2:54) in the consis.

Fernandez’s lone victory came in the consis, with a 1-0 points victory when his opponent, Ohio’s Mustafa Woodi, was whistled for passivity. That was enough to get him a second consi-side match.

On Thursday, the final tournament staged at Fargo — the Junior Greco-Roman classification — will begin at 10 a.m., as will continuing 16U competition.

#BraggingRights: 2A-Region 2

Cutting to the chase…

We’ve got just two more regions to go in our analysis of which district won each of the 12 region tournaments in Florida. Next up is Region 2 in 2A. Which geographic area would win? Orlando area? Lakeland/Brandon? Tampa proper, or points north?

We’ll start with a count of the most points scored by district.

While three of the four districts in 2A-Region 2 had teams with 100+ points, the 2-3 punch of Harmony & Winter Springs generated more than three-quarters of District 5’s points, allowing the 5s to pull away from the others. It was still close, though, as the 5s’ margin of victory was a little less than one point per region slot.

  • District 5: 466 points.
  • District 6: 416.5
  • District 8: 361
  • District 7: 329

How about state qualifiers?

The race between Districts 5 and 6 was just as close in terms of region medals. The 6s wound up with the most champions (five) and finalists (10), but the 5s answered with just a little more depth. District 7, with four Tampa Jesuit champions, matched the 5s’ number of champs.

  • District 5: 18 qualifiers (4 1st, 5 2nd, 5 3rd, 4 4th).
  • District 6: 17 qualifiers (5 1st, 5 2nd, 4 3rd, 3 4th).
  • District 7: 12 qualifiers (4 1st, 2 2nd, 3 3rd, 3 4th).
  • District 8: 9 qualiifers (1 1st, 2 2nd, 2 3rd, 4 4th).

I also like to look at the depth each region has. One measuring indicator I use is to calculate the depth of each district by compiling the win-loss records of each district’s competitors. This was a very close race between the 5s and 6s through 160 (the 6s had a better win percentage through that weight class), but from 170 on up District 5 rolled up a 48-28 record, while the 6s — even with region champs at 170 and 220 — were 25-35.

  • District 5: 114-90
  • District 6: 88-91
  • District 7: 81-89 (47.65% win percentage)
  • District 8: 101-114 (46.98% win percentage).

While the lead for District 5 was quite narrow in terms of points scored and state qualifiers, the 5s had a substantially higher number of wins (the 6s can, and might, claim that they got more mileage out of the wins they had).

Now, for the What Ifs. In MOST cases, there will be a true 4th; there would not be a true 2nd if the runnerup and 3rd-place wrestler met in the semis or quarters, that match would be determinative.

106: No true 2nd or 4th.
113: True 2nd — Runnerup Jonathan Dominguez (Springstead) would face 3rd-place Danny Vargas (Tampa Jesuit). No true 4th.
120: True 2nd — Runnerup Alex Walker (Lake Gibson) would face 3rd-place Darrell Tabor (Brandon). That would be a rematch of the District 6 final, where Walker won by third-period fall. True 4th — Matches Tampa Jesuit’s Christopher Albo (qualified 4th) against Winter Springs’ Ryan Phillips.
126: True 2nd — Runnerup Brent McNichols (Harmony) would face 3rd-place Hayden Whidden (Lake Gibson). True 4th — River Ridge’s Dominick Smith (qualified 4th) would face Lecanto’s Diego Mendez in a rematch of the District 8 final, which Mendez won by a 1-0 count.
132: True 4th — Matches Gaither’s James Simpson (qualified 4th) against Edgewater’s Rocco Vargas.
138: True 2nd — Runnerup Fletcher Small (Harmony) would face third-place Riley Chapdelaine (Winter Springs) in a rematch of the District 5 final, which Small won by decision, 10-5. True 4th — Matches Springstead’s Joe Gallo (qualified 4th) against Pasco’s Jack Evans. That would also be a finals rematch, from District 8, which Gallo won by 5-0 decision.
145: True 4th — Matches Winter Springs’ Davis Deal (qualified 4th) against Gulf’s Dmytriy Snitko.
152: True 2nd — Runnerup Frank Diaz (Brandon) would face 3rd-place Hamzah Mohamad (Freedom, Tampa). True 4th — This is a tough one, because this would match up Winter Springs’ Elijah Penton (qualified 4th) against Pasco’s Savion Spaights. They’d met in the quarters, though, with Spaights winning by fall; fair play to Penton, though, for winning three decisions on the back to get back to the medal round.
160: True 2nd — Runnerup Harlan McCandless (Winter Springs) would face 3rd-place Frank Solorzano (Lake Gibson). True 4th — Matches Pasco’s Devin Jernigan (qualified 4th) against Hillsborough’s John Milian.
170: True 2nd — Runnerup Joe Burgess (Winter Springs) would face 3rd-place Will Jacobson (Harmony) in a rematch of the District 5 final, which Jacobson won by 13-8 decision. No true 4th.
182: True 4th — Matches River Ridge’s Aidan Benjamin (qualified 4th) against Lake Gibson’s Connor Hackett.
195: True 2nd — Runnerup Sebastian Riviere (Gaither) would face 3rd-place Amir Burgess (Pasco). No true 4th.
220: True 2nd — Runnerup Kyle Curl (Springstead) would face 3rd-place Cassidy Grubbs (Pasco) in a rematch of the District 8 final. Curl won that match with a 6-2 decision. True 4th — Matches Harmony’s Nelson Toro (qualified 4th) against Freedom, Tampa’s Trent Ifamilik.
285: True 4th — Matches Brandon’s Cedric Ellis (qualified 4th) against Fivay’s Jarod Scott.

Next up — time permitting this week — will be Region 3 in 2A, which will wrap up the 2A regions.
