#Fargo: Day 1 — Solorio To 16U Women’s Final

FARGO, ND — Were it not for injury, rising Mosley sophomore Valarie Solorio would have been the first north Florida girl to qualify for FHSAA states, or would at least have advanced further than any girl in region-level competition.

Instead, Solorio had to wait a few months longer to write a little history.

Saturday, Solorio became the first north Florida girls wrestler since Sandalwood/Life alum Nadine Fiege, the current girls’ coach at Ponte Vedra, to reach the finals at Fargo and the US Marine Corps 16-under national freestyle tournament.

Rising Mosley sophomore Valarie Solorio is all smiles after her quarterfinal win at Fargo on Saturday, ensuring she would win a “stop sign,” emblematic of an all-American trophy. She would go on to take her semifinal match in Saturday’s evening session and will compete in the 94-pound championship match on Sunday (Photo submitted by Nate Solorio via Facebook).

Solorio was dominant in three wins Saturday, competing at 94 pounds, opening with a superior victory (12-0 in 1:54) over South Carolina’s Annalise Maralit. Her points victory (14-8) in the quarters over Michigan’s Gigi Bragg was her toughest match of the day. In the evening session, Solorio had no problems polishing off California’s Megan Valdez, with another superior victory (13-0 in 2:16).

Solorio will face Glenbard North IL’s Gabriella Gomez in the championship match. A win there would match Fiege’s national-champion effort in 2013.

Gomez was the U15 women’s national runnerup in May. Gomez took 10-0 superior victories in three consecutive rounds to reach the semis, but had to rally from 6-0 and 10-4 deficits to turn back California’s Abbeygael Cabuag, 11-10.

Otherwise, for north Floridians, Saturday was too quick of a day. Rising Pace sophomore Helena Alcantar was 1-2 at 106 on the women’s side, as was Forest rising junior Cane Fernandez (men’s 16U freestyle at 285). Bartram Trail rising junior Ethan Vugman (113) was 0-2.
