#Fargo: Day 2 — Solorio Takes Stop Sign in 16U

FARGO, ND — The opponent had the wrestling pedigree and the national-level experience.

On the biggest stage of her wrestling career, however, rising Mosley sophomore Valarie Solorio didn’t blink.

After giving up the first points in the US Marine Corps 16U women’s freestyle national championship at 94 pounds, Solorio applied the same grit that got her past dozens of Florida wrestlers in 2020-21 — girls or boys — and took a 6-3 points victory over Illlinois’ Gabriella Gomez at the Fargodome.

The victory marked the first time since 2013, when current Ponte Vedra head coach Nadine Fiege — then at Sandalwood and later Life University — won the title.

The victory marked the first time since 2013, when current Ponte Vedra head coach Nadine Fiege — then at Sandalwood and later Life University — won the title.

Gomez — the younger sister of current Wisconsin wrestler Austin Gomez, himself a multiple-time Fargo champion and now wrestling for Bolles alum Chris Bono with the Badgers — scored first with 1:48 left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead.

But Solorio rallied for takedowns of her own — with 1:21 and then again 54 seconds left in the first, with one point tacked on just before the period ended with her up, 5-2.

The second period was more tactical, with neither wrestler able to secure a takedown. Both Gomez and later Solorio scored single points, Solorio’s coming with 40 seconds left, setting the final score at 6-3. At match’s end, photos taken on site showed Solorio stunned at what she’d done.

Women’s freestyle competition will pick back up on Tuesday with juniors competition.

On the men’s side, juniors competition began today as well, but it was a rough and too-quick day for north Florida competitors, as area wrestlers Jacob Witt (120), Dominic Rubino (132) and Michael Shannon (145) all were 0-2.

Results for all four north Florida wrestlers follow below.
