FARGO — Andrea Smith will have two more chances — at least — to build a positive experience on the Fargodome mats Wednesday.
Either way the work on the mats goes, though, the rising Orange Park senior will go home with a podium finish and US Marine Corps Junior women’s freestyle tournament trophy, reaching the consolation quarters at 225 pounds.
Smith will wrestle Montana’s Omastewin Foster in that round on Wednesday morning. A win there will get Smith two more matches; a loss will send her into the seventh-place match later in the afternoon.
Either way, even after losing her first contested match in Tuesday’s quarterfinal, Smith will be a Fargo all-American, after receiving a bye into the consi quarters.
Smith could not get untracked in her match with Texas’ Hannah Francis, who scored a 4-point turn and had a takedown in the first period, adding two more takedowns in the second to take a superior victory, 11-0 in 4:26.
While Smith will come home with a Fargo stop sign, rising Mosley sophomore Valarie Solorio’s bid for a second one came up two matches short Tuesday, as she was 2-2 in the 100-pound bracket, and the only other north Floridian besides Smith to compete in the front-side round of 16 or deeper.
Solorio began her Junior tournament in similar fashion to how her 16U gold-medal effort earlier in the week ended, with four takedowns en route to an 11-0 superior victory (2:12) over Washington’s Nyla O’Brien. After a 1-1 deadlock through one period in the round of 16, however, against California’s Madison Avila, Solorio was finally solved, as Avila worked a 4-point turn and went on to win by fall in 3:45. In the consis, Solorio got back on track, with five takedowns in a 10-0 superior victory over Arizona’s Tatiana Hernandez, but couldn’t push through the tactics of Texas’ Kaycie Tanimoto, who scored takedowns late in both periods in taking a 6-0 points victory.
Matanzas graduate Riley White (122) and Clay rising senior Madisyn Blackburn (132) also were 2-2, with both winning by fall in their first matches, over New York’s Lara Schechter (White, in 4:51) and Minnesota’s Aubrey Mathiowetz (Blackburn, in 2:01). However, both lost in the round of 32, also in similar fashion (White by 10-0 superior victory against California’s Jennifer Soto and Blackburn by 12-1 superior victory against another Californian, Taydem Khamjoi).
Both bounced back in the consis in similar fashion as well, as White racked up six takedowns in a 12-2 superior victory (4:16) over Texas’ Lillian Broderick and Blackburn rolled up five in a 12-0 superior win (3:26) over New York’s Ellanora Bode. But both could not maintain that momentum, as Virginia’s Ariana Carrasquillo pinned White in the first period, and Blackburn suffered a 12-2 superior decision loss against Oklahoma’s Lilly Gough.
Rising Pace sophomore Helena Alcantar — as she had in 16U competition earlier in the week — was 1-2 at 112, with a front-side superior win that included two 4-point turns in a 10-0 win over Colorado’s Savannah Smith.
Wednesday will see Smith wrap up her freestyle tournament, and also will begin Greco-Roman competition on the boys side, in the 16U classification.
