PIGEON FORGE, TN — In the end, it came down to North Florida Wrestling Academy vs. Team Shutt in the final round of Tyrant’s Smoke Show Duals on Sunday.
And Team Shutt, as it had for the most part throughout the two-day event at LeConte Center, was too strong, taking a 62-9 win and first place. But behind a 5-0 first day and earlier wins over fourth-place East Coast Elite (52-24), 84 Athletes Red (61-18) and nearby rivals Kame Style (64-6), NFWA was second, with an 8-1 weekend record.
Five different NFWA wrestlers recorded individual records of 7-1 (one of the team wins was by forfeit, over NFWA Red), including north Floridians Jayce Paridon (3 pins, tech, 2 majors, decision), Tyson Musgrove (4 pins, 2 decisions) and Joshua Sandoval (2 pins, 4 decisions). All three were undefeated prior to their encounter with Team Shutt in the last round.
Marcus McGee (3 pins, 2 majors) and Joseph Rice (3 pins, major) were both 6-2 for NFWA, while Austin Howard (3 pins, tech) and John McNames (2 pins, decision) were 5-3. Shane Duhaysunglod and Christopher Chop each contributed 4-4 weekends.
Kame Style would go on to finish fifth in the 10-team event, with a 4-5 team duals record.
Among north Floridians competing for the team, only Wyatt Leduc (5-4, pin & 3 decisions) had a better-than-.500 record on the weekend, though the team had six wrestlers with such records, including North Port’s Sean-Michael Gonzalez, who was the only wrestler among the local teams to go undefeated (8-0, 4 pins, major & 3 decisions).
NFWA Red was eighth of 10 teams, finding itself in a 3-way tie at 2-7 in the tournament.
Brandon Lewis was the top north Floridian on the team, going 5-2 (3 pins, 2 decisions). Dylan Beck was 4-2 for the Reds, while Matthew Newman, Matthew Kotler and Walter Poe each had 4-4 weekends.
