JENSEN BEACH — Clay kicked off its season in pretty fine shape after placing fifth at Jensen Beach’s Battle of the Beach Friday evening.
The Blue Devils were 4-1 in the one-day duals tournament, losing only to the hosts, 44-31, in Pool A competition. Earlier in pool play, the Blue Devils took down Port St Lucie, 72-12; combined with the loss to Jensen Beach — which would go on to finish second only to Southwest Miami in the tournament — that slotted Clay into the silver bracket stage.
There, the Blue Devils took double-digit wins over Riverdale (51-24), Wellington (40-28) and American Heritage-Delray (54-24).
Clay 285 Ethan Daniels was the only Blue Devil to wrestle in all five matches and finish the day at 5-0. Daniels was a max-pointer in the tournament, scoring 6 team dual points in each round, with four pins.
Two other Clay wrestlers were 3-0 in regular roles, as Ethan Larsen (170) had three pins and Garrett Tyre (220) had two.
Luke Boree (145, pin/major/decision) and Dominic Martin (182, pin/major/decision) were each 4-1 on the day.
Chiming in with 3-2 records for the Blue Devils were Jacob Bucci (106, pin), Maverick Rainwater (126, 2 pins), Xavier Logan (137, 3 pins) and Jadon Bell (195, 2 decisions).
Clay is now off until Wednesday, when the Blue Devils will trek to Palm Coast to face Flagler Palm Coast in an away dual.
