#BobcatRR: 4 Area Champs Take Brackets

GAINESVILLE — For most teams competing at the Bobcat Roundrobin tournament Saturday at Buchholz, it was their initial competitive outing of the season.

For the hosts and Timber Creek, in particular, a pair of teams well and truly in the mix for the 3A-Region 1 title this year, Saturday provided a first measuring stick with both teams in the same gym.

And for the Floridians as a whole, it was a chance to test their mettle against one of the Southeast’s strongest teams, Camden County (GA), which made the trek down and took away 10 weight-class golds.

No team scores were kept at the one-day roundrobin event. A rundown of the top north Floridian performance in each weight class, and any additional top-four placing efforts, follows.

106 — Timber Creek’s Jean Vazquez pinned his way through Pool B to reach the title match, with four pins in all, before losing by tech fall (16-0 in 3:40) to Camden’s Bradley Patterson, the Pool A champ. Forest’s Ayden Ruano (3-1 in Pool B, pin & 2 techs) won by forfeit over Ridgeview’s Jason Barrett (2-1 in Pool A, pin & tech) for third.

113 — In a six-person roundrobin, Timber Creek’s Trenton Dominguez pinned or teched his way through the group, with 4 pins in 4:53 and a 22-7 tech fall in 3:21. His round-2 pin over Union County’s Kale Waters was the effective title match, as Waters was 4-1 with four pins in 1:16. Timber Creek’s Marlo Clark pinned Westside’s Jacob Jackson (:25) in round 2 for effective third- and fourth-place finishes.

120 — The hosts’ Finn Buchanan won Pool B with four pins, adding a fourth in the championship division before losing by tech fall (16-0 in 2:17) to Camden’s Derrick Swinson-Young, the Pool A champ. Union County’s Ethan Hancock, was 2-1 (2 pins) in Pool A and falled Forest’s Leeana Vazquez (2-1, 2 pins in Pool B) in 1:38 to determine third and fourth, respectively.

126 — Buchholz’s Cavarius Liddie won Pool B with four pins, taking a fifth in the championship match, where he falled Camden’s Pool A champ, Carson Poston, in 5:18. Westside’s Jacare Johnson, who had three pins to place second in Pool A, fell by a 10-3 count to Camden’s Mitchell Orendi and placed fourth.

132 — The Bobcats’ Jedidiah Brown won Pool B with two pins, then had two more max-point wins in the championship bracket before falling via major decision (8-0) to Camden’s Gavin Daniels, the Pool A champ. Buchholz teammate Laine Slayton was the runnerup in Pool D and placed fourth, losing in the medal match by fall (2:43) to Newsome’s Scotty Davis.

138 — Buchholz’s Venumadhava Mirel won Pool B with two pins, taking a third in the championship bracket before contesting two tight decisions with Camden wrestlers, winning the first one, 3-1, but then falling to Anthony Santos, 3-2, in the final. Union County’s Rodney Barnett won Pool D with two pins, but lost twice by fall to Camden, including in the medal round against Jacob Fink (:53).

145 — Westside’s Olleon Hickmon won Pool D with a pair of pins, adding two more in the championship bracket, only to lose by fall (3:10) in the championship match to Porter Bryant of Camden. Wolverine teammate Nathan Williams, who had two bonus-point wins to take Pool A, lost by fall to Hickmon in the semis, but then majored Camden’s Elijah Mosley, 8-0, for third.

152 — The hosts’ Aiden Moore made it two titles for the Bobcats, with four pins in 4:35 to win Pool A, then powered past Camden’s Elijah Griffin, 12-5, for the bracket win. Pool B runnerup Daniel Pacheco (3-1, 3 pins) won by forfeit over Ridgeview’s Aodhan Brown (3-1, 3 pins), the Pool A runnerup, for third place.

160 — Buchholz’s Max Szabo won Pool B with two pins, picking up two more in the championship bracket to set up a meeting with 2021 Georgia 7A state champ Konlin Weaver, who won by 17-4 major over Szabo in the final. Forest’s Antonio Brown, the Pool C champ, lost by fall in the semis to Szabo before pinning Pool D champ Konstantine Kiousis of Buchholz in 3:36 for third.

170 — Timber Creek’s Dennis Proulx was 2-0 with two pins to win Pool B, adding a third in the championship bracket and a third-place fall over Union County’s Colin Hadlock in 2:55, with his only loss to Camden in the bracket semi. Hadlock was 1-1 and the Pool C runnerup, losing to the eventual Camden champ by fall in the semis.

182 — Buchholz’s William Lancer took the Pool B win with three pins, then added a fourth in the championship pool before losing by fall in the final round to Camden’s Christopher Schwarting (1:44). Ridgeview Pool B runnerup Raymond Goforth (2-1, 2 pins) pinned Pool A runnerup Carson Gulick of Forest (1-1, pin in pool) in 3:59 for third.

195 — No north Floridians in the top 4. Westside’s Ja’Cory Martin was 3rd in Pool B, then pinned twice in the consi pool for fifth.

220 — Pool A runnerup Chris Pacheco (1-1, pin) of Timber Creek needed to go double-overtime to turn back Pool B runnerup Bryan Diehl of Buchholz (2-1, pin & decision), 4-1, in the championship pool. Prior to that meet, both had lost to Camden wrestlers.

285 — Ridgeview’s Derrick Mosley was the north’s last individual champ, with two pins and a 1-0 win over Camden to take Pool A. Mosley then won decisions over Forest’s Cane Fernandez (7-1) and Timber Creek’s Peter Nesheiwat (7-3) to clinch the group. Nesheiwat, the Pool B champ (3-0, 3 pins) had pinned Fernandez in 2:42 in pool play to clinch third after both were 0-2 in the championship pool.
