#Weeki: Suwannee Takes 2nd

WEEKI WACHEE — Suwannee kicked off its season last weekend with a runnerup finish at the Weeki Wachee Duals, a 16-team event.

The Bulldogs won their pool with a sweep of Gulf (72-12), Fivay (60-22), Dunnellon (66-9), Weeki Wachee (53-21), Crystal River (54-24), Pasco (66-12) and fellow area team Belleview (48-30), good for an average margin of victory of 41.3 points per dual.

In the championship dual, however, multiple-time 1A state duals qualifier Hernando was too strong for Suwannee, as the Leopards took a 39-33 win.

Suwannee sent out 19 different wrestlers over the course of the two-day tournament, and all 19 got their hand raised at least once during that weekend.

Leading the charge with 8-0 weekends were Christian Harrell (220) and Austin McKinney (132). Harrell was a max-pointer, scoring 6 team dual points in every round the team wrestled, with five pins. Meanwhile, McKinney had four pins, one major and two decisions during the tournament.

Four more Suwannee wrestlers finished the weekend unbeaten in regular roles, as Topher Pearson (106/113, 4 pins) was 6-0, Tyson Musgrove (145, 5 pins) 5-0 and both Austin Howard (160, 3 pins & major) and James Prentice (160, 2 pins) were 4-0 in split-time roles.

Eli Jolicoeur (106/113, 4 pins) was 7-1 as one of five Bulldog starters that made appearances in all eight duals, while Justin Contreras (113/120, 3 pins) was 5-3 as another every-round starter.

Jonathan Gonzalez (126) and Benjamin Lewis (152, 2 pins & decision) were each 4-1, Marshall White (138, pin, major & decision) was 4-2, and Tyler Grubb (170, pin) was 4-4 on the weekend for Suwannee.

Suwannee hosts Bay in an in-school dual today. Belleview is off until December 17-18, when it goes to Boca Ciega for the two-day Southside Duals event.
