KISSIMMEE — The Danny Byron Invitational doesn’t determine a team champion over the course of its two days.
Quite frankly, it doesn’t need to. The separation between individual wrestlers provides enough action at Osceola HS. Team scores are not kept.
Below follows a summary of the top area individuals in each weight class:
106 — No Gold bracket competitors. Fleming Island’s Shane Duhaylungsod and Matthew Newman were 4-1 and 3-2, respectively, in the Blue bracket on the second day, placing second and third, respectively.
113 — Fleming Island’s Jayce Paridon bagged his second Gold division title at the Byron, with pins over South Dade and DeLand’s Grady Bryant (6th in Gold), a 10-2 major over Lake Gibson and decisions over Southwest Miami’s Kevin Placer (8-2) and South Dade’s Luis Acevedo (5-4) in the final two rounds of the division. Bryant made the Gold bracket by virtue of his Friday performance, but couldn’t find a Saturday win.
120 — Timber Creek’s Trenton Dominguez and Fleming’s Laird Duhaylungsod were both 3-2 in the Gold bracket. Dominguez downed Duhaylungsod, 6-2, in round 2, and had a major over Camden and pin over Jensen Beach to take second, with losses to Southwest Miami’s Ryan Cominsky (3-2) and to eventual champ Ryan Mooney of Jensen Beach (fall in 1:38). Duhaylungsod had wins over Jensen Beach (6-1), Camden (fall in 4:43) and Cominsky (1-0), falling to Dominguez and to Mooney (fall in 6 minutes).
126 — Three area wrestlers made the Gold bracket, with Buchholz’s Cavarius Liddie placing third, Fleming’s Joshua Mukaddam fifth and DeLand’s Kellen Chapman sixth in a roundrobin that included large-school champs from two different states. Liddle had falls over Chapman, Mukaddam and a Wellington wrestler for his third, with losses by fall to Camden and Osceola. Mukaddam was 1-4 with a pin over Chapman (2:41) for fifth; Chapman picked up an injury-default win over Wellington to close out on a winning note.
132 — No Gold bracket competitors. DeLand’s Joshua Folsom was the only area wrestler in the Blue bracket, going 3-1 and placing second.
138 — Buchholz’s Venumadhava Mirel was fifth and Fleming Island’s Kaden Schaefer sixth in the Gold bracket. Mirel was 2-3 on the day, with a 3-0 win over Jensen Beach and a 4-2 sudden-victory decision over Schaefer in round 4 of the Gold competition. Mirel had losses to Osceola, Palm Bay and Freedom. Meanwhile, Schaefer took a 14-4 major over Palm Bay in round 3, but otherwise had losses to Osceola, Freedom and Jensen Beach.
145 — No Gold bracket competitors. St Augustine’s Christian Jackson was 2-3 and placed 4th in the Blue bracket.
152 — No Gold bracket competitors. Buchholz’s Aiden Moore won the Blue bracket with a 5-0 second day, while Fleming Island’s Christopher Chop was 3-2 for third place and Timber Creek’s Daniel Pacheco was sixth.
160 — Fleming Island’s Ronan Bozeman made it to the Gold bracket with his Friday performance, but it was a tough second day, as he took five losses (three by fall against Florida wrestlers from South Dade, Southwest Miami, Osceola, and a fourth by pin against Camden, plus a loss by decision to Jensen Beach).
170 — The Golden Eagles’ Joshua Sandoval was third and DeLand’s Paul Derosby fifth in the Gold bracket. Sandoval pinned wrestlers from Colquitt County GA and Jensen Beach as well as Derosby for his three wins in the second-day flight, with losses to Camden (10-2) and South Dade (third-period TF). Derosby was 1-4, with an injury-default win over Colquitt and losses by pin against South Dade and Jensen Beach as well as Sandoval, plus a loss by second-period TF against Camden.
182 — Fleming Island’s Jhoel Robinson placed second and DeLand’s Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro was fifth in the Gold flight Saturday. Robinson was 4-1, with pins over Cypress Creek, Southwest Miami, South Dade and Rodriguez-Cayro, falling by a single point to Camden’s Christopher Schwarting, 5-4, in the final round in what was effectively the championship match. Rodriguez-Cayro opened the flight with four losses by pin against Camden, Cypress Creek, Southwest Miami and Robinson, but closed out with a fall over South Dade for fifth.
195 — DeLand’s Andrew Knowles was the only area competitor to make the second-day Gold flight, placing fifth. Hoffstetter’s two wins were by fall over Cypress Creek in round 1 and Selph in round 5, with losses by decision to Southwest Miami and Camden in rounds 2 and 3, and a loss by major to the eventual Palm Bay champ in round 4. Selph opened with three losses by fall or TF against Southwest Miami, Camden and Palm Bay before pinning Cypress Creek in round 4 to clinch fifth.
