WINTER GARDEN — Windermere began 2022 on the right foot Tuesday night at West Orange, winning its rivalry #BattleForTheChain dual against the Warriors, taking a 47-33 victory.
The teams did not meet at 3A-District 4 duals last month, as West Orange did not attend. But the visiting Wolverines (3-1), staked to a 12-0 lead behind forfeit wins in the first two weights, were able to rebuild that lead after the Warriors (7-4) surged to a 21-18 lead midway through, thanks to five straight wins between 152 and 195.
Francisco Delgado-Mendez (132), Jerry Vargas (152), Jeryl Lewis (160) and Jason Ganesh (170) all won by pin for Windermere, which also got an 18-10 major decision from Kurt Vollenweider at 182.
West Orange put a charge into things with pins from Giovanny Perez (120), Chris Perez (126) and Corban Valentine (145), plus a 16-11 win from Conner Smith at 138. After the Wolverines’ late run of victories, the Warriors got two wins up top with pins from Dominic Madrid (220) and Jayden Lamons (285).
The rivals will reconvene at region rival Lake Mary on Saturday for the Rams’ Ron Peters Tournament of Champions, a one-day IBT.
Ocoee 63, Oak Ridge 18: At Ocoee, it was #BattleForTheBelt Night for the Knights, who rose to the occasion by winning four straight between 113 and 132 and six in a row from 160 through 285, taking the rivalry dual win over their former district rival.
Ocoee (4-3 in duals for the season) got pins from Christopher Cerron (132), Hayden Maganck (145), Andy Delva (170), Ethan Smith (182), and Deandre Scott (285), adding another five wins by forfeit. In the night’s only match to go a full six minutes, the Knights’ Eric Gilreath took a 14-7 decision at 160.
The Knights are now off until January 12, when they will go to West Orange for a tri-meet.
