JACKSONVILLE — Yulee and Fernandina Beach wrestled Wednesday night at Episcopal School, not with a 1A-District 3 title on the line.
Instead, a de facto Nassau County champion could be crowned, as the Hornets defeated the Pirates, 54-30, to add that to the 1A-3 title that Yulee had also won (we’ll have a story forthcoming).
Fernandina Beach (5-5) got out to an 18-0 start on pins from Nik Saldana (126), Caden Kubatzke (132) and Dietrich Woods (138).
But Yulee (8-1) answered with an eight-weight run, all max points, to put the dual away, as Dylan Johns (145), Austin Adamson (152), Samuel Sahrphillips (170), Braylen Ricks (220) and Austin Hoyle (285) all won by fall.
Fernandina Beach would add two more pins from Luke Gray (106) and Cael Kubatzke (120) to close out the dual.
Yulee will be hosting its annual Joe Bees Memorial Battle of the Border, a two-day IBT starting on Friday, while Fernandina Beach will be at Riverside’s USMC Challenge, a single-day IBT, on Saturday.
Matanzas 69, Ponte Vedra 6: At Matanzas, the host Pirates were barely slowed down in romping to the dual victory between former district rivals who still see each other at the region round.
Matanzas (8-9 in duals for the season) got pins from Wellington Ferreria (285), Carter Wilder (120), Toryion Stallings (126), Dylan Parkinson (132), Rubin Rodriguez (145) and Tyson Mills (152), plus a 16-14 win from Braden Hawley at 138. The Pirates got out to an 18-0 start; after one Ponte Vedra victory, the Pirates went on a 51-0 run to close out the night.
Ponte Vedra (2-9) got its points on a Poulo Milea win by fall at 113.
Matanzas competed in Thursday night’s 2A-District 4 duals tournament; while results have not been fully reported, we know the Pirates qualified out for next week’s region round by finishing second. Ponte Vedra will next be in action at Bishop Kenny for an away dual on Wednesday.
MISSING: If your team isn’t being written about as we move into the duals post-season and middle third of the regular season, it’s due to results gone missing. Go to our SCHEDULES page; if your team is listed as PENDING for a given event on a given day, I didn’t get results. I’ll still take them, at any time; coaches all have my work email.
RESULTS: Box scores from these two duals can be found HERE.
