LAKELAND — While most girls teams in the coverage area went to Lake Mary over the weekend, Ponte Vedra’s girls was the solo team in attendance at the inaugural Lady Wildcat Scramble, hosted by McKeel Academy.
The Lady Sharks were second out of 25 teams with wrestlers in the field, scoring 153 points, a half-point ahead of South Dade for second. McKeel won the title with 182.5 points, with Ft Myers (135.5) fourth and Palm Harbor (109) fifth.
Below follows a summary of Ponte Vedra top-six placers in the tournament:
112: Cynthia Kowitski reached the final, where she lost by fall (:47) to Palm Harbor University’s Clare Booe. Prior to the final, Kowitski won by fall in Pool C over McKeel, with a semifinal pin (1:06) over George Jenkins in the championship flight.
117: Erin Rizzuto won the title, pinning Strawberry Crest’s Arden Swindle in 3:55 for the championship. Rizzuto had three takedowns in the course of the final, making the third one count for the pin. Earlier, Rizzuto won Pool A with pins over wrestlers from Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor University and Ft Myers, as well as taking a win by forfeit.
122: Lauren Everitt placed fourth, with championship-flight losses by fall against Hernando (eventual champ) and South Dade in the third-place match. To get to that flight, Everitt split a pair of matches in Pool B, pinning Ft Myers (:20) and losing by fall to McKeel, the eventual runnerup.
127: Natalia Choquegonza placed third, with a semifinal loss by fall to Osceola in the championship flight, followed by a third-period pin over another Osceola wrestler in 5:29 to take third. Prior to the final, Choquegonza won Pool B with pins over wrestlers from Immokalee and Strawberry Crest.
142: Olivia Richie won the title, with a finals-round 6-0 win over Palm Harbor University’s Teigan Slauson. Earlier, Richie won Pool B with three pins over wrestlers from Ft Myrers, Osceola and South Lake, plus a win by forfeit.
