LARGO — West Port was the only area team in attendance in this weekend’s annual Jerry Mita two-day IBT, hosted by Pinellas Park.
The Wolfpack finished 10th out of 25 teams in the field, scoring 97.5 points as a group.
Dixie Hollins (231 points) won the event with 231 points, followed by North Port (172.5) in second. Bloomingdale, George Jenkins and Palm Beach Gardens all tied for third, with 146.5 points.
West Port had four placers in the event, with two fourths, a fifth and a sixth.
One of the fourth-place finishers was Tyler Pinkowski (152), who reached the semis at his weight class behind two Friday front-side wins. After a loss by fall (5:57) to the eventual runnerup from Bloomingdale in the semis, Pinkowski took an 8-1 consi-semi win before falling, 10-6, in the third-place match to Northeast.
Like Pinkowski at 152, the Wolfpack’s Raymond Valdez also placed fourth and was a semifinalist, with two front-side wins Friday. After a loss by fall (5:44) to the eventual champion from Palmetto in the semis, Valdez reached a top-four spot with a 9-3 consi-semi win, but then lost by fall (4:38) in the third period of the bronze-medal match to Dixie Hollins.
At 182, Joseph Paci was also a semifinalist with two front-side wins Friday, with a loss by fall (3:37) to the eventual champion from North Port, Paci took a second loss (pin in 1:22) in the consi semis to Dixie Hollins, but rallied for fifth with a 12-3 major over Osceola Fundamental.
West Port’s Luis Sotomeyor was the only placer who did not get to the semis, taking sixth at 170. After a front-side pin, Sotomeyor lost by fall in the quarters to the eventual 3rd from North Port on Friday. In the consis, Sotomeyor had two wins to make podium, but then took too losses by fall to finish sixth.
