#Showdown: Hagerty Takes 2nd At Crosstown Rival Event

OVIEDO — Hagerty was a late add-on for Saturday’s Showdown in O-Town, jumping in at the last to help out crosstown rival and host Oviedo.

And the Huskies made the most of their opportunity, going 4-1 and placing second in the six-team Showdown. Hagerty opened with wins over Lake Howell (76-0), Bishop Moore (69-5), Rockledge (66-12) and the host Lions (66-12) before falling to another FHSAA region-finals qualifier, Merritt Island, 40-31, in the final round.

The event provided Hagerty (23-6 in duals for the season) a chance to knock some rust off and prepare for Friday’s 3A-Region 1 finals matchup against Flagler Palm Coast, set for 6 p.m. The winner of that dual enters the 3A state semis on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Huskies had four wrestlers go 5-0 on the day, three of them as max-pointers, scoring 6 team dual points in every dual the team contested. Lochlann Higgins (113, 3 pins), Kamdon Harrison (160/170, 3 pins) and Hunter Tate (195, 2 pins) were the three max-pointers. Joining them at 5-0 was David Mejia (132/138, 3 pins & major), who bonus-pointed through the day.

Connor Gilliam (170/182, 4 pins) turned in a 4-0 day for Hagerty, while Austin St John (152, 2 pins) added a 3-0 tournament in a regular role.

Ethan Gomez (170/182, 3 pins), Landon Revis (220/285, 2 pins & decision) and Thad Elam (220/285, 3 pins) were each 4-1 and Jacob Genao (126/132, pin) 3-1 for the Huskies. Gavin Nelson (145, 3 pins) chipped in a 3-2 effort as well for Hagerty.

Here are reports on the other two teams in the coverage area that competed Saturday:

Oviedo (11-14 for season, 3-2 in event, 3rd): After opening with a 59-18 loss to the eventual champs, the Lions ran past Lake Howell (66-15) and Bishop Moore (70-12); after the loss to Hagerty, Oviedo claimed third with a 54-27 win over Rockledge.

Conner Rodriguez (106) was a 5-0 max-pointer to lead the Lions in team dual points scored, with 30.

Daniel Restrepo (113/120, major & decision) and Clayton Mitchell (138, 3 pins & decision) were both 4-1 for Oviedo, while Levi Thorpe (285, 2 pins) was 3-1.

Caden Martz (113/120, pin), James Chiaradio (160, 2 pins), Joey Gioa (182/195, 2 pins) and Yosef Mohaisem (220, 2 pins) all were 3-2 on the day for the Lions.

Lake Howell (2-9 for season, 0-5 in event, 5th): The shorthanded Silver Hawks had representation had just six weights, making dual wins difficult. Lake Howell, in addition to the losses noted above, fell to Merritt Island (83-0), Rockledge (48-9) and Bishop Moore (56-24).

Jayden Velazquez (195/220) was the only Lake Howell wrestler above .500 on the day, going 3-2 with 3 pins.
