TALLAHASSEE — The wrong time to face a long-time wrestling power like Manatee is the Hurricanes’ next event after they were eliminated from the 3A-Region 2 quarterfinals on their home mat.
And Manatee took out the frustrations it had on its opponents Saturday at Lincoln’s Trojan Invitational, rolling through five opponents by double-digit margins to the win the title.
Host Lincoln gave the Hurricanes the closest battle they’d see all day, falling 42-30 in the final round. Earlier, the Trojans (7-2 in duals for the season) took wins over Leon (77-6), University Christian (83-0), Ponte Vedra (69-12) and Fletcher (47-27).
Five Lincoln wrestlers were 5-0 on the day, led by Jerry Bowman (182)’s max-point effort (2 pins), scoring 6 team dual points in every dual the team contested.
Joe Tucker (106, decision), Connor Edwards (152, 3 pins & decision; Outstanding Wrestler award), Cayden Bevis (195, pin & 2 techs) and Ryder Luck (220, pin & decision) also were all 5-0 for the Trojans.
Vaniel Caceres (113, 2 pins) and Zaire Fernanders-Jackson (138/145, pin & 2 decisions) were each 4-1, while Mason Crowder (160) was 3-0 in a regular role. Vincent Crump (145, pin) was 3-1, with Jashawn Washington (120/126, pin & tech), Jermaine Yarborough (132/138, pin), Keller Shea (170) and Nic Weaver (285, pin) all chipping in 3-2 efforts for Lincoln.
Here’s a look at the rest of the area teams —
Fletcher (unknown season record, 3-2 in event, 3rd): After opening with a 46-30 loss to Manatee, the Senators rolled past Leon (66-11) and University Christian (66-12), with a tournament-ending 60-17 win over Ponte Vedra.
Three Fletcher wrestlers were 5-0, with Cole O’Brien (126, 3 pins) the team’s lone max-pointer. Ryden Ashmore (120, 2 pins & 2 decisions) and Toby Matson (285, pin & decision) also won five timtes on the day.
Logan Locantora (106), Christopher Strong (152/160, 2 pins), Josh Daltro (160/170) and Joseph Kohlhaas (170/182, pin) each were 4-1 on the day for the Senators, while Dylan Tate (195, pin) turned in a 3-2 performance for Fletcher.
Ponte Vedra (4-13 for season, 2-3 in event, 4th): The Sharks started off 0-2, with an additional 78-0 loss to Manatee, but took double-digit wins over Leon (36-18) and University Christian (48-12) before the loss to Fletcher.
Grady Dolan (132, pin & tech) was 4-1 for Ponte Vedra, its top record of the day, with Poulo Milea (113, pin), Aiden Taylor (120, 2 pins) and Andrew Hissam (138, pin) each chipping in 3-2 tournaments.
Leon (unknown season record, 0-4 in event, T-5th): The Lions didn’t find a team dual win, with just four individual wrestlers, but three of them won at least twice.
In addition to the losses noted above, Leon also fell, 66-12, to Manatee.
The group was led by Nolan Zirgibel (145), who had three pins and a tech fall on the day.
University Christian (unknown season record, 0-4 in event, T-5th): The Christians also didn’t have a dual win, with a 78-0 loss to Manatee in addition to the losses noted above.
Two UC wrestlers did win twice on the day, however.
