COCOA — With the initially-scheduled Barracuda Duals having to be cancelled due to New Smyrna Beach’s qualification for the 2A state duals two-day tournament this past weekend, teams in the event had to scramble a bit.

Space Coast wound up taking over the event, moving it further down the coast, and two area teams — Lake Brantley and Ocoee — competed in the 2022 Duals at SCHS one-day event on Saturday.

The hosts were the only 5-0 team in the field, while the Patriots were 4-1, with a one-point loss to Space Coast (40-39), followed by wins over Astronaut (57-18), Colonial (66-18), the Knights (48-24) and Gateway (39-27).

Ocoee was 3-2 on the day, with wins over Colonial (66-18), Gateway (43-27) and Bishop Moore (60-24), with a loss to Space Coast (54-28) in addition to the loss to Lake Brantley.

The Patriots (8-3 in duals for the season) had four wrestlers go 5-0 on the day, led by max-pointer (6 team dual points earned in every dual the team wrestled) Kai Higgins (138, 4 pins).

Joining Higgins with 5-0 records Saturday were Dario Duany (132, 2 pins & tech), Sebastian Rodriguez (152/160, 2 pins & 2 decisions) and Giovanni Duany (160/170, 4 pins & major).

Christoopher Swanson (182/195, 2 pins & decision) had a 4-1 day, while Rainier Zayas (106, pin), Andres Camposano (113/120), Elijah Huyck (145, 2 pins), Jonathan Stagaard (182/195, pin & decision) and Jackson Jumpp (220, pin) all were 3-2 for Lake Brantley.

Ocoee (9-5 in duals) had two unbeatens up top, with Keniel Carrasquille (220, 3 pins) a 5-0 max-pointer. Deandre Scott (285, 3 pins & decision) joined Carrasquille as a fellow 5-0 unbeaten.

Nathan Ramirez (120/126, 4 pins), Eric Gilreath (160, 2 pins/major/decision) and Andy Delva (170, 3 pins) all were 4-1 for the Knights, with Christopher Cerron (132, pin & decision) turning in a 3-2 day for Ocoee.

The Patriots host their second Brawl roundrobin event on Wednesday night and will be at Timber Creek’s Wolfpack Invitational on Saturday. Ocoee is scheduled to attend the Massung Scramble at McKeel Academy, also on Saturday.
