#Storm: Hagerty 2nd, DeLand 3rd at Celebration

CELEBRATION — Teams that reached the first day of the FHSAA state duals tournament, only to come up short in that round, dominated the scene Saturday at Celebration’s Storm Front Duals.

Cypress Bay, the 3A-Region 4 runnerup, and Hagerty, the Region 1 runnerup, both won their pools in solid fashion, then faced off for the event title, with the south Floridians taking a 38-36 win.

The Huskies (27-9 in duals for the season) won the Purple pool with wins over George Jenkins (66-11), host Celebration (72-12), Cypress Creek (48-35) and Tohopekaliga (72-6), with every starter that wrestled more than once earning at least three wins.

Leadng the charge for Hagerty was David Mejia (132), who was 5-0 with five pins in the tournament. Joining Mejia as max-pointers (6 team dual points in every dual the team wrestled) were Lochlann Higgins (113, 4 pins) and Kamdon Harrison (160, 4 pins).

Connor Gilliam (170/182, 3 pins & decision) and Ethan Gomez (170/182, 3 pins & decision) both put in 5-0 days as well for the Huskies.

Carson Greenier (120, 3 pins), Clayton Childers (138, 3 pins & decision), Blake Watts (152, 3 pins & decision) and Hunter Tate (195, 3 pins) all were 4-1 for Hagerty, with Logan Acey-Kriegshauser (126, 3 pins), Thad Elam (220/285, 3 pins) and Landon Revis (220/285, 3 pins) each added 3-2 days.

Like the Huskies, DeLand (18-5 in duals) was 4-1 with its only loss to Cypress Bay, but the Bulldogs’ loss came in Silver pool competition. There, DeLand took wins over Ridge Community (72-6), Avon Park (76-0) and Kathleen (66-17), adding a third-place tournament win over Cypress Creek, 48-36.

Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro (182, 2 pins) was the Bulldogs’ lone 5-0 max-pointer, while Phoenix Krauth (120, pin & major) bonus-pointed through the tournament as well with a 5-0 day.

Gauge Hopton (106, pin), Kellen Chapman (126, 3 pins), Josh Folsom (132, 2 pins), Mathias Franz (138, 3 pins), Lane Wishart (145, 2 pins), Zane Canada (152, 3 pins) and Andrew Knowles (195, 2 pins & decision) all contributed 4-1 tournaments for DeLand.

Marion Smokes (220) had a 3-1 day for the Bulldogs, while Noah Falk (160, 3 pins) and Paul Derosby (170, pin) were each 3-2.
