Weekend Wrestling Roundup

While the Knockout Summer Slam involved many local wrestlers, it wasn’t the only event of the weekend.

Nationally, Florida’s Cadet and Schoolboy national teams both traveled to the Midwest over last week and weekend for national duals events.

At Loves Park, IL, the Cadet teams were 7th *out of 38 teams) in freestyle and 11th (out of 30) in Greco. In freestyle Pool B, Florida defeated Minnesota Red (56-17) and Missouri Red (41-36) before falling to California, 37-35, in the pool final. In the Gold/Silver pool, Florida lost to Pennsylvania Blue (50-22), Wisconsin Red (41-31) and Iowa (35-34) before defeating Oklahoma Blue, 49-28, for 7th. St Johns’ Liam Davis (106) was 4-3 (1 TF, 3 decisions) at 106, while New Smyrna Beach’s Sawyer VanRider (182) was 1-6 with one tech.

In Greco, Florida was 4th in Pool D, with a 71-7 win over Kansas Red sandwiched by losses first to Missouri (38-36) and Minnesota Blue (39-36). In the Bronze/Cooper pool, Florida had a 39-35 win over Idaho, followed by losses to Michigan Blue (38-34) and Wisconsin (39-38) before hammering Pennsylvania Red, 49-17, for 3rd. VanRider was 3-4 with three techs, while Davis competed the first day, going 2-1 with two TFs.

Meanwhile, at Warren Central HS in Indianapolis, Florida Schoolboy teams were 18th in Greco, out of 33 teams, and 27th out of 36 teams in freestyle. Greco, as in Cadets, was contested first, with Florida taking 5th in Pool C, with a 2-2 record on wins over Nebraska (63-13) and OK Outlaws Blue (49-29) and losses to Michigan Blue (57-24) and Maryland (42-34). In the Red & Blue pool, Florida took wins over Virginia (56-13), Indiana Blue (59-22) and Georgia (44-37) before falling, 44-39, to Pennsylvania Red. Pace resident Riley Alcantar (77) was 5-3 with three pins & 2 TFs, while Orange Park’s Bryan Davis (114) was 3-5 with 2 TFs and an injury-default win.

In freestyle, Florida was 7th in Pool A, with losses to Michigan Blue (44-37) and West Virginia (44-31) and wins over Kansas Red (51-23) and Nebraska (54-17). In the Green/Yellow pool, Florida won that group, with wins over North Carolina (75-1), Oklahoma Blue (52-24), Alabama (57-15) and Maryland (43-27). Alcantar was 6-2 with 3 pins and 2 TFs, while Davis was 5-3, with 2 TFs and one decision.

Elsewhere…

At the Inner City Classic, Creeks’ Mario Del Vecchio (115) was 4-0 in the varsity division (rising 8th grader), with four pins, to win the weight class. Del Vecchio combined the 4 pins in 5:40.
