PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC — Amid the idyllic vistas of the South Carolina coast this weekend, Wewahitchka kicked off its tournament season with a fifth-place finish at the Low Country Invitational, hosted by Waccamaw HS.
The Gators scored 115 points as a team, with said team having just one senior and five middle-schoolers.
And yet, Wewa had as many individual titles (two) as third-place Strong Rock Christian, a solid small-school Georgia team, and more than fourth-place Piedmont Academy, which had one.
Friday night, senior Conner Roberts picked up his 125th career win with his third of what would become a five-pin tournament, falling a wrestler from host and team champion Waccamaw in the third period to win his Friday pool. On Saturday, Roberts had two more pins to win the tournament title at 160.

In the 126 bracket, sophomore Jake Parker (17th at 120) earned the Gators’ first title on Saturday, bonus-pointing his way through the weekend. Parker had an 8-0 major to win his pool, then had two first-period falls and a 10-0 major in the final — in which he scored in each period — to take first place.
Two of the Gators’ middle-schoolers — 7th-grader Zeke Cooper (106) and 8th-grader Wesley Spencer (120) — took 3rds, while junior Jarrett Spencer (152) and freshman James Hardy (220) both were fourth in their weights.
Results from the tournament can be found HERE.
Wewahitchka returns to duals on Wednesday with another road-trip to a district rival, this time at Rutherford.
