#Recap: Hernando Kiwanis

By MATMEN, Sunday, 2:10 p.m.

BROOKSVILLE — For the three teams in competition at this weekend’s 41st Annual Kiwanis Invitational at Hernando, the sledding was pretty tough.

Of the three teams, South Lake’s 21st-place team finish (46.5 points) was tops in the area, with Forest in 24th with 35.5 points and West Port tied for 25th at 25.

As projected in our preview in this space, Brandon won the title with 292.5 points, but the host Leopards pushed the Eagles pretty hard, with 273. Tampa Jesuit (232), Zephyrhills Christian (193) and Heritage (162.5) rounded out the top five teams in the weekend’s 30-team IBT.

For the Eagles, Jaydius Bognar (152) and Chontre Weathersby (285) both had sixths. Bognar reached the 152 semis, but then lost by injury-default there to Zephyrhills Christian, the eventual runnerup, and did not compete further. Weathersby also reached the semis at 285 behind three quick pins, but then lost by fall to Land O’Lakes, the eventual runnerup.

Forest also had one sixth, as Andrew Lawrence (160) reached the semis, where he took a loss by pin to eventual runnerup Heritage in that round. West Port did not have any placers.

Forest has an in-school dual with Villages scheduled for Tuesday, while West Port’s next scheduled date is the 3A-District 2 duals tournament on Thursday at Buchholz. South Lake returns to competition for Villages’ Amanda St John Memorial Holiday tournament on December 17.

Individually, St Johns resident Mario Del Vecchio continued to prove up his 1A state ranking, with a third at 113 for Cocoa Beach. Del Vecchio pinned his way into the semis, where he lost by fall to Jesuit’s Roman Lermer; he’d bounce back with two falls in the consis.
