HOMEWOOD, AL — For Liberty County and its small group of half a dozen kids, it’s usually quite difficult to compete in any meaningful team way with lineups double and triple the size, and good as well.
But that’s where the competition is, and that’s why the Bulldogs made the trek across the state line for Wednesday’s Homewood Holiday Scramble.
Liberty County was 14th out of 15 teams with 131.5 team points in the one-day pool & crossover-formatted tournament.
At 126, Jay Brown (4th-1A at 120) took third overall, with three pins to win his pool. Brown then took a 6-0 loss in the championship semis, but rallied for a 5-2 win in the third-place match over Helena (AL), thanks to a late turn for big back points that provided the margin of victory.
Like his brother, Hunter Brown opened his account at 132 with three pins to take his pool. But he then ran into the eventual weight-class champ in the crossover semis, taking losses by tech in the semis and by fall in the third-place match for fourth.
Teammate Scout Harr (285) added a sixth at his weight class.
The Bulldogs are now off until January 5, when they’ll take part in the 1A-District 2 duals at Suwannee.
