1A-District 2 Duals
When & where: Thursday at Suwannee.
Teams in the field: In addition to the host Bulldogs (ranked 8th as a team), Florida High (13th), Godby, Liberty County, Marianna and Wakulla (14th) may all compete; teams are not required to compete in the FHSAA dual-tournament series.
At stake: Top two teams will advance to the 1A-Region 2 round on January 12. The district champion will host and wrestle Bay in one quarterfinal, while the district runnerup will wrestle North Bay Haven in the other quarterfinal. The two winners will wrestle a second round.
Synopsis: Suwannee’s won two dual tournaments at Manatee and Yulee and was second only to Huntsville ALA in last week’s Beast of the Beach. But don’t count out Wakulla, the War Eagles finished in the top six at Beast and have had several successful FHSAA tournament runs, getting to two separate state-title duals, so they know what to do here. Florida High has closed the gap considerably as well and will be a tough out; they’re rated above Wakulla in the state rankings, so that may be a bitterly-contested dual.
Potential individual milestones: If Wakulla gets four duals in on Thursday, senior Jae T Thaxton could be in line to reach 125 career victories, his second such milestone of the season.
